Keith
And I got to fly flying around this inside my inside my deer blind here, and I can't fucking catch it and keep touching me. I swear it's a fly. All right. So I'm going to give you guys a 20, uh, top 20 lists of winter preps for preppers and survival lists. Um, not necessarily only for winter, uh, prepper survivals, but also could be for your home as well. And I'll probably start with some of the home stuff, but it'll, it's all going to be based around your home. And, um, Jeremy and buddy, I know you guys have your own thing you want to get into. So I'm going to go ahead and start this list right now. And then you guys can go on after me.

00:02:11.99
Jeremy
All right.

00:02:11.99
Keith
Sound good?

00:02:12.83
Jeremy
Yep.

00:02:12.97
Keith
All right. All right. So number one, we're going to inspect insulation if needed. Now, you got to add extra insulation to your attic spaces if you own a home.

00:02:23.63
Keith
Okay. And also your basement areas. A lot of people don't know that insulation over time goes away, flattens, you know, becomes less effective. So you got to check that. Inspect it up in your attic.

00:02:33.84
Keith
It's a big heat loss of your attic. So you definitely want to check that out. ah Number two is going to be seal all air leaks. You're going to use weather stripping and foam to seal drafts around doors, windows, utility penetrations like pipes and electrical going outside, dryer vents, that sort of thing. um Use heavy duty caulking if you needed to, ah if needed, around your outside of your windows and your doors.

00:02:59.60
Keith
um ah Some people may not be aware that caulking, you know, loses its ah plasticity over time, and will actually come off and you'll get you'll get air loss through there and and heat loss through there as well. Also for your AC.

00:03:16.81
Keith
Almost got him.

00:03:20.33
Keith
All right, number three is going to be winterize your plumbing and HVAC systems. ah Insulate pipes with foam pipe insulation. You've all seen it. It looks like the little foam things. Looks like ah the pool noodles, except they're smaller. You know, like you kids swim with. It's like a foam deal. You put to put it over your pipes and you can do it under your sinks and in your basements. Anywhere where you've got water lines, you should insulate those if they're not.

00:03:44.38
Keith
ah You can also insulate the pipes that are outside on your HVAC system if you own the home. Now, remember, if you are leasing or renting and you're in an older type of a place, you should be getting your maintenance people to to check these things as well because it's your AC and it's your heat and electricity that's being used when windows aren't sealed properly or, you know, heat is escaping. So this goes for everybody.

00:04:13.43
Keith
um

00:04:16.84
Keith
Oh, okay. Yeah. And also have a backup plan to prevent freezing such as like heat tape. Goddamn. Let me turn this phone off. Sorry, guys. And volume off. Also, you need to have a backup plan like ah you also need to have a backup plan for preventing freezing such as heat tape, ah heat lamps, which I use both in my house for the wintertime. I've got a heat tape that runs on my but ah water pipe that comes in from the ah from the pump outside and it runs through a little section of ah ah bricks outside that can freeze up if necessary. So I got some heat tape in there. It's super cheap. Get down to any hardware store and you can buy, probably buy for 10, 12 bucks, depending how long it is. And basically all you do is just plug it in and the the tape heats up very, very slightly. It does not get super hot, and but it heats up just enough to keep those pipes from freezing.

00:05:11.07
Keith
So get yourself some of that. ah Make sure that your heating systems like furnaces, heat pumps, forced air, electric central heating systems are in top peak running condition. they ah They need cleaning, they need servicing and maintaining. If you're a homeowner, you know all about it. And if you can't do any of this kind of stuff, just get just hire somebody. It's not that expensive. But you can also go on Google or YouTube and you can actually learn how to do this stuff. ah Number four is inspect and clean your roof and gutters. This is actually pretty important.

00:05:38.18
Keith
You've got to remove debris from your gutters. If you don't, they'll fill up with water. They will ah they will freeze and look heavy and they'll break off and it's very expensive, but it'll also hurt somebody, cause damage. Also check your roof for weak points that could fail under the heavy snow, ice, that sort of thing. You want to check all that stuff. I would also, while you're up there, check trees if there's any big limbs or anything that's hanging over your house.

00:06:01.82
Keith
that could, they may be getting old because if they get that snow weight on air on them, they could break and actually come down and hit your house. You don't want that happening in the winter time. Okay.

00:06:15.53
Keith
okay All right. Number five is check and test alternative lighting. You want to stock up on batteries, LED lanterns, candles, oil lamps, and oil if if you want to.

00:06:27.78
Keith
I like oil lamps. Make sure that you make sure that all these things are functional and ready to use. Pretty simple one. Number six, winterize your vehicle. And this is something that Buddy is going to be talking about in a little bit. But you want to equip your vehicles with, you know, snow tires if you're in that type of an area, um emergency kit, blankets, extra fuel, that kind of thing. So, you know, I would even keep like your bug out stuff, but Buddy's gonna talk about that.

00:06:52.37
Keith
Number seven is protect livestock and pets. Ensure that outdoor animals have adequate shelter, food, and water sources that won't freeze. That's an important one. We forget about that. ah Stock up on supplies and store them indoors away from pests and rodents. I did not remember that and I had a whole bag of chicken feed that was eaten by something. It happens.

00:07:14.85
Keith
Number eight, secure outdoor structures. Inspect sheds, greenhouses, fences, barns, chicken cubes, outbuildings, all that kind of stuff. um Any type of structure you have that's outside of your home, check it, inspect it, just take a walk around it, kick the walls, that sort of thing. ah Reinforce them if you have to for high winds, heavy snow, freezing temperatures. Just um do a little inspection. it's It's easy, and for me, it's fun. I like doing it, but you know it's easy to do. Number nine, create an emergency water supply. Store at least one gallon. I'm going to say this again.

00:07:47.31
Keith
one gallon of water per person per day for two weeks. So like for one person, that would be 14 gallons of water. That's a lot. One person, 14, that's picture like 14 gallons of milk. It's a lot of water.

00:08:02.36
Keith
store at least one gallon of water per person per, uh, for, for two weeks. And you want to also make sure you've got some purification methods like, uh, filters, tablets, you know, that sort of thing, in case you run out and you have to use it, some other type of water source, melting snow, a stream of your pool, whatever it might be. I cannot stress how important it is to have fresh drinking water, uh, in your preps. So, and I had before and I'll say it every single time.

00:08:28.60
Keith
Number 10 is stockpile long-term food supplies and show that you have a variety of shelf stable foods like canned goods, freeze dried meals, oats and grains, snacks, coffee and powdered milk. I basically cannot survive without coffee and I drink my coffee creamed. So I got to have powdered milk of half two creamer. We always have that stuff in our prepper pantry constantly. ah Snacks are also good, makes you feel good. And so, you know, grab a couple so of protein bars or, you know,

00:08:58.37
Keith
chocolate bars, that kind of thing. Snickers always my my go to. Number 11 is stockpile cold weather gear, have heavy duty winter clothing, gloves and hats, thermal underwear and socks.

00:09:10.83
Keith
Thermal blankets, sleeping bags, and insulated waterproof boots. Always good to have. Make sure that you have enough for every family member and don't forget about your pets. I know it's totally weird and may look woke, but I have actually, I've got coats for my dogs in case, you know, for those real freezing times where they got to go outside. I put them on them and they go and they're perfectly happy. They can stay out there forever. By the way, remember to take them off when you get back in the house, because they will overheat. They're not made, their bodies aren't made for that.

00:09:42.04
Keith
Number 12, stockpile fuel sources store propane, kerosene, firewood, kindling, fire logs and starters and other heating fuels in a safe, accessible location to last the entire winter season. It is awesome. It is great to have a fireplace until you run out of wood.

00:10:02.19
Keith
and so you run out wood Not good. When you run out of wood, your fireplace is basically just and a place for your warm air to to escape the house. They do make fireplace plugs, by the way. So if you have a fireplace or a wood burning stove, they do make these balloon type things that you put in there and fill up with air. So it keeps your hot air from leaving the house through the just make sure you take them out before you light a fire. I just turned that damn phone off. What the hell? Volume down.

00:10:32.36
Keith
come OK. Number 13, build a salt and ice melt reserve. Keep rock salt, ice melt, and sand or sand on hand to maintain walkways and driveways in case of ice buildup. This is ah this pretty basic stuff there. It's common sense. ah Another thing people won't remember is you will not be able to find this stuff in late January and February. And if you do, it's going to be very expensive and it's going to be very limited supplies. So stock up on that right away.

00:11:00.81
Keith
Number 14, maintain your bug out bag. um We probably should have added this to the the deal, but I'm just gonna say something quick on it. Update your bug out bag for winter essentials like hand warmers, ah extra layers, emergency blankets, snacks, water, water filtration, that kind of stuff. Just double check it for your for for your winter needs.

00:11:27.75
Keith
Number 15, install backup communication systems. ah Have a hand crank radios, NOAA radios, ham radios, and two way handheld radios. um I also had on there, I think I had on here satellite phones, but I took it off the list because I don't think anybody has satellite phones. I've never even seen one, so I don't know.

00:11:48.44
Keith
um You want to make sure these things are ready for emergency communications at all times. Check the batteries and chargers, make sure that they're all functional and ready to go, and continually check them throughout the winter to make sure they're still in good condition.

00:12:02.59
Keith
Number 16. Plan for long-term power loss. Evaluate and test off-grid power solutions like solar panels, solar systems, wind turbines if you have them, ah battery power banks, and ah backup energy sources is a critical thing when you have extended ah backup energy sources is critical in extended outages. So I'm sure you could talk to anybody who's been in that situation. The worst thing to do is running out of ah power. So you want to make sure you have that.

00:12:31.90
Keith
Number 17, install a wood stove, kind of difficult, kind of expensive, but install a wood stove or backup heat source. A wood burning stove or fireplace provides a grid down heating solution during power failures. That's pretty much common sense. It's probably too late in the season for you to do something like that. But if you have somebody that's got a wood burning stove that's sitting in a garage and not using, see if they can borrow it. Ask if you can buy it.

00:12:57.40
Keith
You know, maybe get barter for it. Look on Facebook marketplace. They got them all over the place. In fact, I saw one in my area. We missed out on it because we didn't call fast enough, but it was free to pick up a wood burning stove. It was a big one, like the kind you cook on. And they we by the time we got to them, they were it was already gone. But they said, if you if you can pick it up, you can have it for free.

00:13:21.12
Keith
ah Number 18, prepare for power outages. Invest in a solar power generator or hand crank charger or backup batteries to charge essential devices like cell phones and laptops. Also get a power bank also get a power bank for jump starting dead car batteries. Extreme cold conditions will kill a car battery. Even a good car battery it can go dead in extreme cold conditions. Number 19, create a warm room strategy.

00:13:53.85
Keith
Sorry. Number 19, create a warm room strategy. Designate one insulated room in your home as a central warm area in case of extended power loss. Use stick curtains or blankets to seal it off. Prepare this area ahead of time so you're ready to so that it's ready to be used as a makeshift bug in space at a moment's notice. And lastly, number 20, install heavy curtains and insulated window covers.

00:14:22.57
Keith
blackout or thermal curtains help retain heat and block out cold drafts. They also reduce visibility to potential intruders, looters, brip predators, marauders, that sort of thing. Anybody who might want to come in, you don't want them to know what room you're in. So these things also block out light. So that is my top 20 list. i I know that I'm going to get, you know, all kinds of comments about You know, you forgot this, you forgot that. This is just a list. This is not the, the end all. This is a list for me to tell you guys so that you can start thinking on your own. You can, it gives you ideas of where to start. And then from there you go and you do the things that you need. That's necessary for your life and your situation and that sort of thing. So who wants to go next? Who wants to follow that?

00:15:06.19
Jeremy
Mmm.

00:15:06.23
Keith
but

00:15:07.99
Jeremy
That was pretty thick.

00:15:09.33
Keith
It's thick.

00:15:10.44
Jeremy
Yeah, ah buddy, you want to take that one first?

00:15:14.15
Buddy
Yeah, I have two parts. So what whyt why don't I do the vehicle preparedness and then let you go. And then I'll finish up with the kit, your bug out kit.

00:15:25.44
Keith
Oh, you're going to do a bug out. Okay. Bug out bag or kit.

00:15:27.53
Buddy
Well, yeah, a bag for the survival kit for the view.

00:15:28.61
Keith
Yeah.

00:15:31.80
Keith
Yeah.

00:15:33.57
Buddy
That work?

00:15:33.63
Keith
Sounds good. Yeah.

00:15:35.95
Buddy
All right. All right. So it's like he said, it's very important to, uh, you know, keep everything in tip top shape, you know, your house, your car, um, yourself as well during these cold, uh,

00:15:51.81
Buddy
The cold climate, what you don't want to do is put yourself at risk with actually going out in a snowstorm or in an ice storm or any kind of you know serious cold and have to do stuff that you should have done when it was a lot warmer. So this episode, and we're trying to help you prepare. And like Keith said, it's not an end all be all list. and It's just some things that we come up with that you know we we practice in our own life.

00:16:20.57
Buddy
to you know to help you get your wheels turning because your preps are different than our preps. And you know everybody needs to realize that you have to, you're your you're your best, what what am I trying to say here?

00:16:36.71
Buddy
yeah nobody yeah youre Nobody loves you like yourself.

00:16:36.96
Keith
Judge.

00:16:40.27
Buddy
So as far as your preps go, you have to be the one ultimately that makes a decision whether or not you know you're going to, what What kind of preps are you gonna use and maintain? so All right, I'll start out with the winter vehicle preparedness. First off, you need to make sure your vehicle's in tip-top shape. Now's the time to do it ah before it gets too cold. you know if If you do your own vehicle maintenance yourself, I'd rather do it you know when it's a little warmer out and there's not inclement weather, there's nothing like putting on your winter tires you know in a snowstorm.

00:17:20.65
Buddy
So, you know, if you need to put them on, put them on now, but things, things to look out for. And there's also, uh, there's some local, uh, I know the place I changed my role the other day, they're like, Hey, can we check these things out for, you know, for you for the upcoming winter?

00:17:37.57
Buddy
And I was like, man, that's a great idea. Okay.

00:17:40.07
Keith
Hold on, hold on, hold on.

00:17:40.24
Buddy
Let's do it.

00:17:41.07
Keith
We're, I'm getting some noise.

00:17:44.70
Keith
What is that?

00:17:46.12
Buddy
I don't know.

00:17:46.91
Jeremy
Missed you got her cousin.

00:17:46.98
Buddy
That's weird.

00:17:46.96
Keith
You hear that? It's like, it's like a radio playing like a, like a handheld radio.

00:17:51.28
Buddy
Like a radio or a...

00:17:52.69
Keith
No, like ah not like a radio with music or radio, like somebody talking.

00:17:56.01
Buddy
Oh, wow.

00:17:56.32
Jeremy
Uh, that may have been me.

00:17:58.62
Keith
Oh, okay. All right.

00:17:59.59
Jeremy
Sorry, maybe.

00:18:03.08
Keith
Buddy, it's all you.

00:18:04.23
Buddy
Yeah, all right. Oh, I hear it again. Okay, so you're you' when I was getting oil change the other day,

00:18:16.53
Buddy
They asked to check these things. I said, yeah, it's great idea. Let's do it. So, uh, one of the things are some of the things they checked was, uh, they checked all the belts. Uh, they checked the hoses, fluids, filters, uh, the battery that tested my battery, the check the cables. Um, they looked at all the fluids, make sure they were all on the right, you know, at the right levels. And, uh, they did a break check, which was kind of cool.

00:18:46.67
Buddy
um They check the wipers and the wiper fluid. That's very important, especially you get into these winter roads that, you know, places put salt, they put their, you know, sometimes places put sand on the road, whatever. You're going to get, ah you're going to run through that fluid quickly. So that's something you might want to keep, you know, at its maximum levels and keep some extra in in your trunk.

00:19:14.97
Buddy
You need to test your defroster and windshield wiper.

00:19:23.65
Buddy
What am I trying to say here? You need to check check your heater and your defroster just to make sure that they're working. you know make you know the The worst time to figure it out your heater's not working is when it gets cold out, right?

00:19:36.10
Buddy
So test that out you know now.

00:19:37.67
Keith
Well, you're right about that because you, you know, you go all summer long, just using your AC and then, you know, spring comes or the mid season comes. You're not using anything. And all of a sudden it gets cold one day and go turn your heater on. It's not working.

00:19:49.23
Buddy
Yep.

00:19:49.43
Keith
That sucks.

00:19:50.37
Buddy
Yep. That's true. Also check your tire. Make sure you have tread on your tires. Make sure you have the know proper tires for your area.

00:20:01.06
Buddy
And like I said earlier, you might want to put your winter tires on if if you if you're in an area where you need them. Make sure your tires are inflated. ah Hot weather compared to cold weather does different things to your tire level.

00:20:13.82
Buddy
So keep an eye on those. When the temperature drops, usually you lose a little bit of pressure on there. And then you need to have a ah robust kit in your vehicle that has certain things in it, like normal. like normal I mean, you want to have a tool kit in there, just to make sure the tool is in case something breaks down. and Some other things ill I'll talk about in a little bit. so Just make sure your vehicle's in proper order and it's something you should be doing anyhow. but you know One of the additional things you might want to use keep in mind is is make sure you know in your your thermostat works in your radiator and you got proper radiator fluid levels.

00:21:02.20
Buddy
so Uh, like I said, this is just a few things you can, you might do some other things in your area, or you might not have to do some of these things, but it's just something to keep in mind, keeping back here, you know, back your head to, you know, these, these things are important, especially in the times, uh, when you can, you have the time now in most areas that you haven't had the winter weather yet.

00:21:27.27
Buddy
So you have time now to do it. And believe me, it sucks when it gets.

00:21:30.60
Keith
Yeah, winter hasn't started yet. There's, there's still plenty of time to get your vehicle into shape.

00:21:35.36
Buddy
Yeah, true.

00:21:39.14
Buddy
So we hand it off.

00:21:39.64
Keith
You know, be you know, people die in their vehicles in wintertime happens every single winter in the United States, all over the world, but it happens all the time. And it just a few simple little things that, you know, could you could probably get a Walmart for 20, 30 bucks could, could have saved the lives. You know, that's, that's, that's the truth of it.

00:21:58.65
Buddy
Well, yeah. and ah there There's ah a class that I've been looking at for like three years now. So it's a little course. You go out for three days. You go for a weekend. And it's in Utah. So you drive up to Utah, up in the mountains, and you you pull up in this little, I would call it a rest area or a little area. Then all of a sudden, bam, once you get there, oh, your vehicle broke down. And it's usually there's a bunch of snow up there, or it's snowing. And you got to live out of your vehicle for the weekend with what you came up there with. And they do give you a,

00:22:31.90
Buddy
ah You know a list of things to bring with you, but you have to survive out of what you have in your vehicle and You you know that that that makes it interesting You know say least a lot of people don't think of this stuff until you know, it's too late. I mean I I'm guilty of that as well

00:22:48.58
Keith
Well, Jeremy didn't when he went down to the hurricane zone.

00:22:53.16
Buddy
Yeah, I mean, if you can survive it, you know, you come back and you can, you learn lessons from it, but it's that survival thing.

00:22:53.80
Keith
Just saying.

00:23:00.29
Buddy
And in wintertime, it seems like it's a little, little less forgiving than in the summertime, for real.

00:23:06.86
Keith
Yeah, my vehicle right now is not set up for winter at all. I have not done it. I know I need to do it, but it's not. It's all set up for work on the farm and it's set up for summertime. I've got a bunch of tools in there, but I have nothing really that I think I got a blanket. I really don't have much in there that, uh, that can do anything. Bunch of bottled water stashed all over the place for me and for Aussie because he usually goes out there with me, my dog. Um, but that's about it. My, my truck's not ready to go yet. I don't even have good tires on it. I mean, we put brand new tires on, uh, on Rhonda's truck.

00:23:36.97
Keith
Uh, and it, you know, it costs a bunch of money. I can't do two trucks at one time. So much, we we use her truck whenever necessary. And if I have to, I'll use mine, but it's got terrible tires on it. If I go out in the snow, I'm, I'm, it's a dangerous situation. So hopefully when she's, you know, on her trips to Texas over the winter time, it's not going to have much snow because you know, a lot of times I got to get downtown.

00:23:59.86
Buddy
Yeah, it's, uh, when there's a different, it's a total different environment for driving to and, uh, you know, everybody, you know, most people are used to, uh, the areas they live in and driving in those different conditions. But, you know, when you, when you go, uh, you're used to driving in the snow in New York, like, or for me, most of where I was living before I moved to New York, uh,

00:24:25.51
Buddy
There was a lot of ice and we didn't get a lot of snow storms. If we did, you know, it it wasn't bad. It was a dusting or, you know, but mainly ice. Well, up there they have snow and it's a different type of snow than what I got.

00:24:38.62
Buddy
You know, the wind blown snow and you know, Oklahoma. So, you know,

00:24:43.29
Keith
Yeah, I drew, I grew up driving in snow and I'm, I'm outstanding at it. No problems whatsoever. And, uh, I even went through the mountains of, uh, Colorado Ronda and I did. And she described it to one of her friends as he has, he has nerves of steel. You grew up on those mountain roads, like with cliffs on one side and you're on ice and you're just driving. You just, you know, I have no problem with it, but I moved down to Texas years ago. Those folks down there have no freaking idea how to drive in snow or ice. They just, they just go off the road constantly.

00:25:12.26
Buddy
Yeah, you're.

00:25:12.40
Keith
It takes time to practice that stuff.

00:25:14.70
Jeremy
When Texas freezes over. Oh my gosh.

00:25:18.28
Buddy
Yeah.

00:25:18.60
Keith
Yeah.

00:25:20.51
Buddy
There's a saying out there that, you know, when health freezes over, well, when Texas freezes over, it's, I think it's worse than health freezing over. So.

00:25:28.40
Keith
I was on the highway in Texas once and I was, you know, doing my thing, being nicer nice and, nice and cautious. I think I was only doing like 50 and a 70 cause it was ice and snow. And it was a, there was an off ramp coming up. So I slowed down a little bit in his big old truck. I mean, this guy in his big old truck, he thought, I got the four wheel drive, no problem. And he went whipping past me at like 90 smashes, smashed that beautiful truck all over the place. And I just, and I just cruised on past him.

00:25:51.63
Jeremy
o

00:25:54.92
Buddy
That may or may not have happened to me.

00:25:56.22
Keith
I don't care. I don't care which. Well, was that, was that you? Was that a big black truck?

00:26:00.96
Buddy
No, it wasn't me. I used to laugh at people because I drive by them going about 70, you know, you know, and a lot of times when they don't clear the roads all the way, you got those two little, you know, you have snow in the middle of, you have a path.

00:26:14.17
Keith
Right. Right.

00:26:15.09
Jeremy
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm.

00:26:15.54
Buddy
So here I am, you should have bought a four wheel drive, you know. Look at that Prius over there and man, next thing I know, I did about five spins and was you know off the road and it's like people are driving laughing at me and stuff, so yeah.

00:26:25.14
Keith
You learn fast. You learn fast.

00:26:29.45
Buddy
I was younger then, I slowed down, so. All right, well, for the vehicles, I don't have nothing else, so Jeremy, you wanna take it from here and I'll pick on the back end with some other stuff.

00:26:38.99
Jeremy
Yeah. I did want to touch on a couple of things that you guys both said. First one, um people dying during the wintertime by making the wrong decisions.

00:26:52.53
Jeremy
The biggest one is using the wrong heating source indoors without proper ventilation and people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. You can't smell it. You don't know what's happening. You just go to sleep, but you never wake up. um It happens every year um all over the United States and a lot of times it's unfortunately older people um or people who have I guess the proper word would be slightly lower income housing. um They figure out a way to heat their home and then the next thing you know, they're on the news, you know. um And then the other one is being in shape, especially during the winter.

00:27:37.67
Jeremy
uh, having a base of cardio and core during the winter, especially for people who have to, um, shovel their drive and, you know, get out there and clear pathways. That is a lot of work. And every year also, uh, you hear about it on the news. This guy was out shoveling his driveway and he died of a massive heart attack. Um,

00:28:00.87
Jeremy
and the proper foods during the winter to keep you actually fueled. A lot of people don't know this, but when you're in the winter time and you're doing physical labor, ah that's actually you're more susceptible to being not only ah needing significant amount of water, but actually becoming a heat casualty during the winter.

00:28:25.54
Jeremy
Um, I can recall, uh, and I think we've talked about this before quite some years ago. Uh, I was in a military school and I did not feel thirsty and I was using a urinal and basically what came out looked like chocolate milk. Um, I wasn't drinking water, doing physical labor in a military school during the winter time. And, um,

00:28:49.83
Jeremy
Apparently I was in the early stages of basically renal failure, kidney, my kidneys were shutting down. Um, so consuming a lot of water, but with the proper nutrient dense foods during the wintertime is extremely important. Um, but mine, I want to talk about power generation. Um,

00:29:10.01
Jeremy
And power generation during the wintertime for me personally is a mix of different things. And the top one I'll go with right off the bat is having a trisource generator, uh, can take regular fuel. It can take propane and it can take fuel mix. Um, they're different price, depending on where you go and the level in which you you know want to go ranging anywhere from.

00:29:39.63
Jeremy
about eight, $900 for the lower, lower end, low watt usage up to three or $4,000. You can get them at Lowe's. You can get them at Home Depot. Walmart actually offers some that you can order online, but having a three source generator very specifically, and I'm going to talk about a regular generator, ah is really, ah really cool because you don't have to depend on just gas.

00:30:07.33
Jeremy
Um, propane tanks are fairly inexpensive. You can get them exchanged. You can get them refilled. I keep about six to eight on hand at home at all times, and they last a long time.

00:30:18.36
Jeremy
And the great thing about propane is you don't have to concern yourself, uh, with getting them swapped out, you know, in a manner of time, is it the same way that you do regular fuel and even, or even diesel.

00:30:29.73
Keith
are they are these the Are these the propane tanks that you use for like your grill, the big the round ones? Okay, all right.

00:30:34.99
Jeremy
Same propane, same exact propane.

00:30:35.93
Keith
Yeah, okay.

00:30:37.24
Jeremy
And you can I know some people who have these and they actually will go out and get the larger tanks that you sometimes see on different kinds of RVs.

00:30:48.24
Jeremy
um They're a little bit more slender, but they're taller. um And that will last a significant amount of time if you need to use a generator. um The second one is a regular generator.

00:31:01.55
Jeremy
Some people cannot afford a trisource generator, I get it, they're more expensive. But you can get a regular generator that runs on regular gas ah anywhere from 250 to 350 bucks, and they're pretty good. um But for both of these types of generators, you do, if you're going to try to run a significant amount of stuff inside of your house,

00:31:25.14
Jeremy
You have to have an electrician ah install the correct um a breaker box add-on onto your breaker. So that way you can actually ah backfill it into the breaker box and it and it runs. It's not going to run everything.

00:31:43.09
Jeremy
depending on your whatt your your your wattage output. But if you need to just run, say, your refrigerator freezer and a couple of other things, it works pretty well. um I have a friend of mine. He has a three source generator and he took a 50 foot piece of ah power cord for a 30 amp ah RV power source, cut the back end of it pig tailed it with a ah outlet area a um for for what you would normally use for your dryer, pig tailed it into that line, and then has that connected to his generator. And if anything happens, he goes and turns off the main breaker. He plugs in that pig tail into his dryer outlet, and it will power his home. ah Not everything, but quite a few things.

00:32:40.24
Jeremy
so Uh, generators, either three source or a regular generator. Um, you know, I, I tell everybody just have one, um, run it every couple of months.

00:32:51.61
Keith
Yeah. Oh, and I want to, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cut you off.

00:32:54.27
Jeremy
No, you're good.

00:32:54.46
Keith
Go ahead. ah What I was going to say is ah what you're talking about connecting your generator to your breaker box. If you don't know how to do this, you really need to hire an electrician and it has to be some special gear switching that goes on there because yeah it's not that it's illegal, it might be, but if you connect a generator to your home power source and you don't use the right switching, that electricity can actually go back out into the lines and kill somebody down the road.

00:33:04.67
Jeremy
Mm-hmm.

00:33:22.74
Jeremy
a and Yeah.

00:33:23.56
Keith
So you've got to be really careful when it comes to that stuff. But it is a great solution, man. Because those things are, those switches are instant. So as your power goes out, your generator kicks on.

00:33:30.67
Jeremy
Yeah. Yeah. Um, and with a, with either one, if you're going to use either ah a trisource or a regular gasoline generator, um, with that gas, you know, make sure that it's, it's being rotated out.

00:33:46.22
Jeremy
Um, for a generator, I only use, uh, uh, ethanol free gas on all of my small engine, anything. I only use ethanol free.

00:33:56.38
Keith
Where'd you get that?

00:33:56.55
Jeremy
The reason what's up.

00:33:58.34
Keith
Where'd you get that at?

00:33:59.63
Jeremy
ethanol-free gas, you can get it at most gas stations. You just look for the blue pump.

00:34:04.57
Keith
Oh, that's the one you're talking about. Okay.

00:34:06.21
Jeremy
Yeah, ethanol-free.

00:34:06.62
Keith
Now, because they they sell some really good gas at like some of the yeah auto stores, like in cans, I think it's expensive, but you know.

00:34:11.10
Jeremy
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It is expensive, but it's ready to go. um I use those ah for, say, like my weed eater, my leaf blower, and a lot of my small engines that are um that are two cycle, they come pre-mixed and it's ethanol free.

00:34:31.33
Jeremy
And the ethanol free is really important for small engines to keep the ah the fuel lines cleaned out. Because regular gasoline these days, what they make us use here is just junk.

00:34:44.23
Jeremy
It's trash. it's yeah It's got water and corn and other BS.

00:34:45.31
Keith
And it's got it's got water in it too.

00:34:50.19
Jeremy
So I only use ethanol free in all of my small engine. And and that includes the generator that's on my ah RV. Um, so, and then the next one, um, we'll go with, uh, whole house, uh, generator. So for instance, you can go to the company like Generac.

00:35:08.83
Jeremy
Generac is a backup power source that back feeds your home instantly when the power goes out. um They're a pretty large system and you can get them in varying degrees of wattage output. They have to be installed by the Generac company and there's a bunch of different companies that that offer these. Generac um Renogy has a whole house um backup, um and there are several others, but it's it's a neat system to have. Unfortunately, it is quite pricey.

00:35:47.44
Jeremy
um

00:35:47.98
Keith
It's expensive, but I think those bigger companies like Generac will offer financing too if you're able to, you know, for some of the stuff.

00:35:52.51
Jeremy
Yes, yeah, they do. um I've looked into that. And it's it's a neat idea, you know? It's just, man, it is expensive. um And it's it sucks that it's so expensive. If you look at the, like, for instance, a Generac Guardian 24 kilowatt um backup generator, it ranges anywhere from 5,000 to 7,000, depending on where you're getting it from.

00:36:23.94
Jeremy
um They do have some smaller models available for around 2000. But it's really what you are trying to what you're trying to power. Like if you're only trying to power your fridge and maybe have some lights going. I mean, that's that's one thing. But, you know, if you're trying to power your whole house and, you know, play video games and do all those other things, that's a lot of friggin power that that people don't think about.

00:36:54.12
Jeremy
They just they they don't you know think about those kinds of things. um Hell, even just to run your refrigerator. ah is quite a bit of power. um So it's that's something to think about. And then the next one would be whole house solar. um Whole house solar is becoming increasingly popular because there are now government subsidized programs to help you get a whole house solar. The only issue is is that if you go with those grants or if you go with those government programs,

00:37:28.79
Jeremy
Yes, the power is going into your batteries. The issue is, is you may not necessarily own that power. um It's regulated by the power company. And like where I live in North Carolina, there's only one power company. ah Pretty much. And that's Duke Energy and they're going to get their money. um So whole house solar installed, if you can afford it by a private company,

00:37:57.23
Jeremy
And what it does is they they put the solar panels on your house or in a array where that maximizes the sun in a 12 hour period. That power is converted into a ah into a converter, and then that converter then stores that energy into large, basically the same kind of battery you would see in like an RV or a large boat.

00:38:24.50
Jeremy
It stores the energy into those. And then when your regular power in your home is off, the power from those battery packs which are in line in a series is fed into the home.

00:38:39.94
Jeremy
It is not the same amount of output. It is not the same amount of density as power you're receiving from like the city, but it is power. And the great thing is, is it does this thing at night and then there in the day when the sun comes back out, it's recharging, but.

00:38:59.34
Jeremy
with the issue with winter is most times you often see overcast days, rainy days, cloudy days. Those have a an effect on the type of ah sunlight that's going into your solar panels.

00:39:15.76
Jeremy
The way around this, as you're going to end up coming out a little bit more money, is getting a microcrystalline type of solar panel. the If you look at a solar panel, you can see these lines in these grids. And oftentimes when you're looking at them, there are these you universe you know these these perfectly spaced out lines.

00:39:37.07
Jeremy
When you start to see lines that are super duper close, they actually pull in they're pulling in the same amount of sunlight, but they're actually converting that energy more efficiently and a lot quicker than you would see on the large grid. It takes a lot longer for that energy to be converted ah when you have a large square versus a much, much, much squa so smaller square. um And then lastly, you have your battery packs.

00:40:05.92
Jeremy
um There's a bunch of different companies. I personally use Renogy and Jackery. Jackery is a bit more expensive, in my opinion. um But you can get varying sizes of these different battery packs. And basically what they are is you can charge them in your car, you can charge them with the wall, or you can purchase the solar panels and the solar panels will charge the battery pack itself directly and you can still continue to use it. So a lot of people think battery pack is like, you know, you get that small one that's 10,000 milliamps or whatever for your phone. ah What I'm talking about is it's a large box. It's got a handle. It's got mine particularly has six regular 110 outlets and then it has a 30 amp ah ah yeah outlet as well. Mine's pretty big.

00:41:03.80
Jeremy
um And then I have a microcrystalline solar briefcase, which charges it if I need to charge it with the sun. I also have the wall outlet and then I also have the ah car charger as well. So power generation during the winter time in the event of power loss. And you know, there's a lot of different places if you Like, say, what's going on over there in Oklahoma for y'all? Lots of wind you know and ice builds up on those lines, weighs them down. Next thing you know, power's gone. And the linemen have to find the source of the power loss and before they can fix it. So you might be looking at quite a while. So that is my piece on power generation.

00:41:50.98
Keith
Yeah, that's awesome. That's that's outstanding. I use the eco flow, which is a similar to Jackery. And that's right. Jackery is a very good brand, no doubt about it. I was back in the day when I was selling this stuff, I wasn't able to get an account with Jackery, but I was with some of but the others. And so I picked eco flow and I like it a lot.

00:42:10.01
Keith
those one I've got similar to yours got the six jacks on it and I can basically run my refrigerators and anything like that off of it if I need to for hours ah with it and hook it up to the solar. So I pushed it before on ah on one of our ah one of our shows i don't know a year or so ago about you really should think about a solar power generator. Now I know they you know they run five six seven eight hundred dollars twelve I think the one I've got is like twelve you know hundred But, um, they, they're pretty expensive.

00:42:34.99
Keith
They, they are expensive, but they are absolutely, we had a power outage here lasted all day into the night.

00:42:35.17
Jeremy
yeah

00:42:40.30
Keith
Actually it was over 24 hours and we ran pretty much all of our systems, uh, for work, you know, all of our satellite, you know, the, uh, the star link, we ran everything off of it and it was not even a hiccup, no power to the house, but we were running business right out of the house.

00:42:54.47
Keith
No problem.

00:42:54.55
Jeremy
Hmm. Hmm. Nice.

00:42:58.34
Keith
Yep. Uh, buddy, did you have something else you wanted to run through some, something about bug out bags are now, are you talking about a kit for your, your car or.

00:43:03.78
Buddy
ah Yeah, first I've got a little bit to add to the the view.

00:43:11.36
Buddy
ay Pretty much, yeah, you're looking at you're looking at a total setup different for the wintertime than the summertime for your car. um Some of its overlap, other things aren't. I can dive in here. But the bottom line is, you know,

00:43:27.76
Buddy
There's a few extra things you can keep in your car to to better your chances when you get out there with any kind of scenario that you might run into. but One of the things is having some either kitty litter or some sand, having just a small bucket of it. You know you get into a situation where you're either in some snow or or that's just slick or it's starting to, or ice that, you know, makes it to where you can't get traction. Well, you can throw down some sand behind your behind your tires or in the direction of traveling your tires and it it'll help give you a little bit of traction. I've seen people put rimnet carpets, you know, just small pieces of carpet or take out the floorboards and stick it underneath the tires to get traction. That works a little bit too.

00:44:17.03
Buddy
Just a small amount. You don't need a lot just you just enough to get you going again a small shovel um um There's folding snow shovels out there. You can find it, you know your box stores But you know throw that in your trunk or in the back of your truck or wherever you whatever you might have To worry if you need to dig yourself out a little bit you can dig yourself out um Road flares Everybody you know you they're out there. You can get them on Amazon road flares are a great Multi-faceted tool for you if you get into an accident you go off the road you can throw it up on the road ah To you know signal where you're at um You can also start a fire with it, so keep warm I mean you can do a lot of things the road flares, and they're not that expensive so something to look into um Have a great

00:45:15.72
Buddy
Yeah. When I say great, ah you know, a very tremendously huge, the best one in the world, but have a first aid kit, you know, with it, with a tourniquet there. And, you know, have enough tourniquets, have enough tourniquets there for your family. Uh, in case you do, uh, you know, get into an accident where you have a tourniquet for everybody, you never know what's going to happen, but have a a good first aid kit there.

00:45:42.16
Buddy
medical kit that you can put into action if you need it. And it's something you should have in your cart, you know, regardless of the season. um

00:45:51.08
Keith
I went in my truck and I use it constantly because it's a work truck. And if you guys ever seen any of my videos, you can tell that my, I'm constantly bleeding. My hands, arms always have cuts on them, you know, stuff like that.

00:46:01.13
Keith
So I'm always using it. I put it in there just for emergencies, but I actually ended up breaking into it and using it as soon as I got the property.

00:46:02.53
Buddy
Yeah.

00:46:07.17
Buddy
Man, my truck, had I call it the command center because i can there's so much stuff I can do out of my truck. and you know it's it's got If I don't have it in there, I feel like I don't need it, but i'm ah I'm sure there's stuff in there that I'm thinking all the time, oh, it'd be great to have this. but um I have you know my daily you know get home bag or my computer bag. I have an ankle kit that's ah a first aid kit with a tourniquet on it. I'm i'm carrying tourniquets in my pocket. I don't know, i've I've taken some medical training and seen the need and had to use it enough to where I have enough medical training and I'm not scared to stop at an accident and help out if if need be. So it's good to have that stuff.

00:46:55.75
Buddy
Also, of a rope and or a tow strap would be handy to have. you know If you do go off the side of the road and get into a snow bank or it's icy out there and you get into a ditch or you know jump a curb or whatever it may be, having some kind of recovery strap or some kind of means of recovery would be helpful.

00:47:16.91
Buddy
and you know, it's just, it's good practice to have, you know, somebody, there's good Samaritans out there, you know, usually the guy like me in ah in a four-wheel drive truck is gonna, you know, laugh at you at first because your Prius got stuck in a snow bank the size of, ah you know, the kid up the streets, bicycle could go through, but, you know, the toe strap's a good practice to have in this kind of situations.

00:47:44.38
Buddy
And then another thing is,

00:47:46.87
Keith
It's funny when, uh, when Rhonda bought her truck, she she went to the store to outfit it, you know, with, with the burn, she stuff. That's the first thing she grabbed off the shelf was a toe, uh, the tow strap.

00:47:57.25
Buddy
Yeah, they're they're underutilized for sure. And I may or may not have a few of them, especially a lot of people get out there and they break them. ah you know Out on the farm, I would you know try to pull some things out or throw it around a log or something. I would break them all the time. Well, a broken tow strap means it's a um a broken ratchet strap. and It's now a tow strap for me. So but you can use them for your eight UTVs or side-by-sides or you know smaller trucks. and i mean I don't know, I repurpose a lot of things.

00:48:26.91
Buddy
So those are some things that, you know, you should have a lot of these things in your car or your vehicle at all times, but you know, it's just add them to your list if if you didn't think of them yourself.

00:48:38.36
Buddy
I'm sure there's a lot of other things you guys carry that I might've missed, but hey, just something that I come up with. So next I want to talk about, they'll go ahead.

00:48:45.10
Keith
Yeah. And and and men men and women have have different needs as well. So, you know, it's, we're, we're coming from a man's point of view and Rhonda wasn't able to jump on today. So I'm sure there's lots of stuff that women would think of that we were like, Oh damn, never would have thought of that.

00:48:57.36
Jeremy
And that's a ah big point, especially as dads. You know, we we ah sometimes dads, we talk big game, especially if we have boys, too. But you always got to think about the fact that girls have girl things and girl needs.

00:49:11.78
Jeremy
And I have to remind myself that sometimes, you know, it's.

00:49:15.00
Buddy
Well, very, very true, to man. and And I have, well, back when my girls were younger, you know it's two below zero with the windshield of 20 below, and they're wearing shorts and and crocs.

00:49:25.64
Jeremy
Hmm.

00:49:29.92
Buddy
And one to wear in a t-shirt or a hoodie maybe, and with a ah blanket around them going to school, I'm like, what what are you doing? you know

00:49:38.27
Jeremy
I hate Crocs so damn much.

00:49:40.29
Buddy
Yeah, they it's just, you know, a lot of kids will just put a minimal stuff and and go to school, you know, and it's a good practice to, you know. make them wear clothes, make them wear a nice jacket, you know a warm jacket at least, and throw in their you know pockets, some gloves, a scarf, and a watch cap, a toboggan, a toque, or whatever you want to call it, you know something for their head to keep the heat in. Because you can do a lot have a lot of heat loss from your head.

00:50:13.58
Buddy
so

00:50:13.62
Keith
Yeah, I know if I'm raising boys, if you're going to get them gloves and hats, go ahead and buy two because a lot of times they don't make it home.

00:50:19.58
Buddy
And one is none, and two is one, especially at school.

00:50:19.66
Jeremy
Yeah.

00:50:21.73
Keith
That's right.

00:50:23.43
Buddy
I mean, you know at the end of the year, I learned this after you know a few years of losing, going out and buying a nice Columbia jacket for the girls. And it's a lot of money for me.

00:50:33.92
Buddy
and I was in the military. so

00:50:36.37
Keith
That's a lot of money for everybody.

00:50:36.49
Buddy
and then we lose the Yeah, losing them and stuff and and towards the end of the year go to the I would ask but hey Do you have a loss of found? You know and not ask about the loss I found but you got to see this stuff in there and and at the end of the year they if nobody takes it They they donate it.

00:50:52.65
Buddy
So I was like, hey, what do you got in there? So Yeah, I'm thrifty like that

00:50:56.02
Keith
Yeah, rummage through that shit, man. Pick out some stuff you like.

00:50:59.15
Jeremy
I've always wondered yeah when when the kids would come home, especially as teenagers, and they're like, yeah, I don't even know where that hoodie I had on this morning went. I'm like, how in the world do you lose an entire article of clothing in the span of time from when you left wearing it to when you got home and you're not wearing it?

00:51:19.80
Jeremy
How how does that happen?

00:51:21.81
Buddy
And they don't care because they didn't buy it.

00:51:23.24
Jeremy
Yeah, they don't. Yeah. I mean, how my youngest probably has half of my hoodies. She steals hoodies.

00:51:31.30
Buddy
Yeah. Yeah. might My, my, uh, my girls got old enough to start wearing my stuff. I mean, I think they wore it even when they were younger stuff, well but like in high school, there wasn't a sacred hoodie and you know, that I had. So I don't, jackets, hoodies, whatever, you know, it's,

00:51:48.85
Keith
I still hear Rhonda say things to her daughters like, you know, you know, you're not too old enough for an ass whooping. So

00:51:55.56
Buddy
Yeah, I brought you in this world I can take you out So yeah, the next thing I want to talk about is I'm not necessarily a bug out bad guy.

00:51:59.36
Jeremy
Yes.

00:52:07.15
Buddy
I do have one But I'm talking about in your vehicle and get home bad cuz I mean it's it's warmer at my house and is my car and I'm more comfortable there so things that I pack and These are some things that I have in mind and a few of them that I'm going to add after doing a little bit of research for this. You know, to add to my get home bag. One of the first things is you want to have extra Gloves, mittens, and I'll talk about mittens here in a second compared to gloves, you know, hats, something over your head, a scarf, winter so extra winter socks in there. You want to cover your whole family or, you know, from I don't have, ah you know, my my kids are grown and i'm I'm traveling by myself usually. If I'm lucky, I have a friend, I have one friend. So if my one friend is in the vehicle with me, then I'm going to have an extra pair of socks in there just in case, you know, something to keep warm.

00:53:04.63
Buddy
but You need to have extra stuff in there for them because you know you're gonna have those kids you know that go to school in the Crocs and and like I talked about earlier, Crocs and shorts and 10 degree weather or they lose their jacket on the way home. And you know you have you're able to cover down on them. Also have a nice extra winter jacket in there, you know either for yourself or somebody else. and and

00:53:35.88
Buddy
I have an old military parka with a hood. you know they you know A nice jacket with a and you know a collar like a ah packable down or something is nice to have. But if you have a hood with that, you increase your chances of staying warmer with with a hood. It it does does a tremendous job with you know just extra heat and blocks the wind and keeps the rain out. And you know and in the Army, we had a saying that, you know If it's raining, I'm not, you know, it doesn't bother me so much. If it's cold, it doesn't bother me so much. But if it's raining and it's cold, that's misery right there. So, you know, keep that in mind that, you know, you're a dry, a dry person's a happy person. So keep that in mind. Have some boots in your vehicle, like winter boots, something that's, you know, you might drive to work, yeah females might drive and, and you know, they're high heels or,

00:54:35.16
Buddy
or whatever, but have some boots in there in case you gotta to get out and walk. And that's something I preach when I do consulting for the the get home bag is like, hey, have some in the summertime or or in other seasons, have a pair of you know shoes you can walk in because your shoes that that you wore to the office are inappropriate for walking home. If you need to walk 10, 35 miles, 20 miles, whatever it may be.

00:55:02.56
Keith
Yeah. And also remember about wear and tear. I've got a really nice pair of winter boots. They, they're absolutely toasty. They were made for a sub degree for like 40 below waterproof the whole nine yards. These are amazing boots. I can't remember what they're, what brand they are, but probably can't remember what brand yards because of what I'm about to say. Only wear them when you need to wear them because you will wear them out. So you don't have to buy a $150 pair of snow boots or winter boots every year. You can buy one pair, only use them when you need them and you'll have them for 10 years. Don't wear them out. There's no use. Don't go buy $100 pair of snow boots and wear them from, you know, from Thanksgiving to March. Wear them only when you need them. Don't wear them out.

00:55:47.09
Buddy
Yeah, and i have I have one of those stories that that Jeremy talked about you know going to a military school. And and you know mine wasn't for water.

00:55:54.46
Jeremy
Mm-hmm.

00:55:56.14
Buddy
I didn't have the right boots.

00:55:57.62
Jeremy
Mm.

00:55:58.24
Buddy
And we got into a freak storm. Actually, two it was at two different places. But the second time, I was smarter. um I had to go buy a pair of very expensive winter boots.

00:56:10.13
Buddy
they were they were The Danner boots, if anybody's familiar with Danner's, they are not they're not cheap. um but I still have those tanner boots and and they're definitely going in my, you know, my winter get home bag for sure. Cause I don't wear them every day. They're, they're still in a great condition and it's, it'd be a great boot for, you know, a winter situation where you might get stranded. um Also have a flashlight or some kind of, you know, torture or headlamp or something in case you do go off the, you know, the road or you get stranded where you can

00:56:47.27
Buddy
You might go into a large snowbank and need to see to get yourself out. So a flashlight, some kind of torch, some kind of light, um a whistle. I've learned this recently. We used to use them in the military a lot for different purposes, but recently I've heard people talk about a whistle and I've, I trained dogs or have trained dogs in the past where I use you train whistle commands. And so now I have a whistle.

00:57:16.32
Buddy
with me at all times, it might be around my neck right now, to where you know you get in a snowbank or get stranded and you know you hear a search party you know yelling you know yelling for you, whatever, you and maybe you can't talk or you can't yell loud enough or you know you you crush your larynx or whatever, you can at least maybe blow you know the whistle where they can hear you. It's just it's a good practice to use.

00:57:41.38
Buddy
Um, have blankets and or a sleeping bag in your, in your vehicle. Uh, yeah, it's going to take up a lot of space, but, um, it's also going to be warm. And if you need it, um, well, blankets are better than, you know, your, your fleece, fleece blankets are okay. Well, blankets are better. You can find an old army surplus store with a nice, uh, get you an old wool army blanket. The green ones are the gray ones or the black ones, whatever it may be. They're nice and warm.

00:58:11.41
Buddy
or a good sleeping bag because you might end up ah gra you know jumping in there and it's gonna, it helps keep that heat in. It's something you need to, you know, when you're trying to keep, you know, regulate your body temperature, a sleeping bag is gonna help you regulate your body temperature and keep that heat in. So it's it's a good thing to have.

00:58:35.40
Buddy
um Also have a knife some kind of cutting tool I like to carry a box blade You know always have a knife maybe three knives on me at all times, you know But have have them on there or in your bag or in your vehicle having within reach in case you have to cut off, you know a seat belt, or you might have to cut some firewood, you know some twigs to get something going you know for a little fire, just whatever it may be. you know Have the right knives available there. And I've seen guys with their Swiss Army knife cut little branches out and make a you know in a survival

00:59:18.23
Buddy
Scenario where they're you know, cutting, you know branches off with a little Swiss army knife and and starting fires and surviving So have something there. I have a folding Saw and underneath my seat of my truck and ah in a hatchet to where um in case I do need you know to ever use it and It's there for me.

00:59:40.63
Buddy
It's a good practice to have Yeah and duct tape

00:59:41.71
Keith
Me too. I got the same stuff. Yep.

00:59:45.80
Buddy
you know You can say the word old duct tape. I should write a book, but you know duct tape is highly flammable as well as and you know it sticks to everything and and sometimes when you don't want it to. But duct tape, you can actually burn it. It's helped start the fire, but you can also use it as a rope or you can use it for so many different things. Duct tape is so multipurpose.

01:00:10.01
Buddy
Now, water. Always have water in your vehicle. Well, in the wintertime it might freeze on you. So what you need to do, you can't really do anything about the water in your vehicle freezing. But if you have a metal container,

01:00:27.30
Buddy
in a tea light, and i and so I was talking about tea lights in a minute, but you can you can melt that water, and there you go. You have a way to, with a metal container, a single walled metal container, not your coffee mugs that you take to work that have double walls, ah have a single walled, and they're cheaper too, that's what's cool about them. Have a single walled metal container where you can melt the ice or snow or anything else to where you could, if you needed some water, a water source, there you go.

01:00:57.93
Buddy
I'll just go ahead and talk about the tea lights now ah You know the little tea lights from the dollar store you can for five bucks You can get I don't know 20 or 30 or 40. I don't know I I have them all over my house and in my garage and they're all over the place

01:01:11.80
Keith
I mean, don't get the scented ones, non-scent if you can.

01:01:13.71
Buddy
Yeah, yeah, just the the really cheap, non-scented tea lights. You can use them for a heating source in a car and it's not going to put out a lot of fire or burn anything really as much because it's it's pretty much self-contained. And, you know, you can warm your hands up to feet. You can do a lot of things with it.

01:01:34.63
Buddy
it's It's just a good, you can you can use it to see with, you can use it for heat, you can do a lot, you can cook on it if you need to, melt some water, a multi-purpose little piece of kit there. Also, hand warmers.

01:01:50.74
Buddy
you know A lot of people use them when they go hunting, they stick them in their pockets or you know they're in the pants or whatever. When I go camping, I throw them in my my sleeping bag to heat up my feet. you know There's one one or two of them at my feet and one them around my midsection and one around you know up around my hands.

01:02:07.23
Keith
You know, I got tons of those things and, but mine are like probably a few years old now because you need to keep kit for such a long time. Do those things run out or do they, do they stay?

01:02:16.03
Buddy
ah Eventually they do, yeah.

01:02:17.68
Keith
Do they? Okay. So they might, might not be any good anymore.

01:02:18.78
Buddy
but i mean Yeah, I mean, just have extra, you know, buy buy some every, and that's what I do.

01:02:22.07
Keith
I better check them.

01:02:26.11
Buddy
I buy some every year and I probably need to start date, put a date on them with the Sharpie or something, you know, but that's something we can learn about.

01:02:37.04
Buddy
hand sanitizer, you know, it's good to have hand sanitizers from daily practice, you know, put some, put some in your vehicle to where, you know, hand sanitizer is one of those things where you can start a fire with it.

01:02:47.32
Buddy
You can, you can do a lot of things with that alcohol and hand sanitizer. So it's a good thing to have in your bag. Let's talk about some food now.

01:02:58.27
Buddy
You know, I use

01:02:58.85
Keith
Well, hold on for for for warmth. I do a yeah up did a thing years ago. I don't even think I have one now, but i'll I'll put one on a video here pretty soon. But you take a quart size paint can, you get them from the store, like without paint, you know just straight up. And you put a yeah you take the toilet paper roll and you take the wood ah the the cardboard out of it, the tube, and you squish it down into that that can. Then you fill it all the way up to the top with 70% or more percent alcohol.

01:03:27.79
Keith
and you close the lid, take some duct tape, a whole roll if you want, and duct tape a big lighter to the side of that thing, and you've got yourself a portable heater for your vehicle for anything. ah You can cook off of it, but it's clean. 70% or more alcohol cleans pure. There's no fumes that come off of it and you can light it up inside your vehicle and you can set it up, you know light it up for about 10 minutes and then blow it out and your your vehicle stays warm for an hour. you You can heat up your hands, you can cook something off of it, use it as ah as ah as a candle if you want to, but I'll make a video on it and throw it on my my deal and I'll also put it on the bunker as well.

01:04:04.82
Keith
if If anybody hasn't seen it, it's an old school thing. It's it's many years old, but it actually does work.

01:04:09.63
Jeremy
Hmm.

01:04:09.98
Buddy
Yeah. I, it might've been you that I've, I've seen, uh, or maybe it could have been Patrick, uh, a couple of years ago, put, put that in a rocket stove up on, uh, uh, on the Facebook page and a rocket stoves or, you know, you can build them or construct them for a little or nothing.

01:04:29.97
Buddy
And that's a, it's a good thing. Uh, to do a portable one is, is an awesome.

01:04:35.42
Keith
If you do a rocket stove, do not make sure you have an exhaust going out of the house.

01:04:39.16
Buddy
Yes.

01:04:39.26
Keith
Don't don't use it inside your house.

01:04:40.67
Buddy
wouldn't use it in your car to, to heat with, but, and also if you are heating out of your car, like Jeremy said earlier, go ahead and invent a little bit open, crack your windows or whatever.

01:04:42.51
Keith
No.

01:04:51.79
Keith
Definitely. Yep. Because because any any kind of flame clean or not is going to burn oxygen.

01:04:52.65
Buddy
i suppose

01:04:56.71
Buddy
Yeah. So ah talking about food, you know I use trail mix, power bars, have some kind of calories, but calories is heat. And so you're going to need some kind of subsistence to keep yourself warm. So have something to eat, whatever you may have. Power bars last along, so you put them in there in your bag. They'll last the whole winter.

01:05:21.84
Buddy
nuts, you know, not going to last as long, but they'll last probably the winter, but have something you, you know, just some, some kind of subsistence. I can't even say that word.

01:05:33.28
Buddy
How do you say that word?

01:05:33.61
Keith
Yeah, I'll, I'll, I'll eat a 10 year old power bar.

01:05:34.54
Buddy
Subsistence.

01:05:36.16
Keith
I don't care. I'm hungry.

01:05:37.35
Buddy
Yeah.

01:05:37.55
Keith
i I'm eating it.

01:05:38.83
Buddy
Yeah. And you need it, and you're eating it for, you know, food and, uh, but you want the calories, you want the heat that it generates. Um, so whatever, whatever your jam is, go for it.

01:05:51.05
Buddy
All right, so cell phone, everybody has cell phone in the pocket, at least 99.9% of this, everybody has them. Make sure you have a charger with you. And I always carry, okay, I carry three different power banks with me at all times. ah Have power banks with you, you can buy them for $30. Have it charged all the time, because you never know when your power goes out. and then you know, in this situation, you've got a way to, you can make a 911 call or, you know, text, you know, a lot of times your cell phone won't work, but sometimes texts, you won't have a good enough signal for a call that a lot of times texts will send out. So remember that if you can't make the call, go ahead and try text. And then a lot of times 911 calls will go through magically for some reason. I can speak intelligently about it, but there we go.

01:06:47.95
Buddy
All right, have a lighter with you or some, I like just regular lighters and waterproof matches. I'll take the matchbox, the waterproof matchbox and wrap it with some duct tape, lighter same way. You can use a duct tape as a flint, you know, start to fire with and it's got multiple, multiple different purposes. All right, have some wet wipes with you. um You might have to use a rest.

01:07:15.10
Keith
Dude wipes.

01:07:16.28
Buddy
dude wipes, wet wipes, baby wipes, some kind of wipes with you. Cause you might get, you know, or you might have to work on your car. You might get oil on your hands. You might get this, you might get that. And instead of, you know, getting it all over the place or getting it all over you, uh, becoming flammable with oil or fluids or something like that. You can clean yourself with it. Uh, use it for restroom. You can use it for whatever, you know, they've got multi purposes and they don't take up a lot of space.

01:07:44.31
Jeremy
I would tell you what about baby wipes and certain other wipey products, um and given the right temperatures, they can freeze. And I would tell you, find a way to warm them up a little bit before you put them on the back door brown eye, because those suckers get super duper cold.

01:08:01.43
Buddy
ah yeah

01:08:03.72
Keith
You didn't, you didn't just say that,

01:08:05.83
Jeremy
I did just say that. I'm telling you, I have been in freezing temperatures and you got to do what you got to do. And if you have never been woken up by cold stuff, go ahead and go and slap a slap a baby wipe on yourself in the wintertime.

01:08:16.96
Buddy
Yes Yeah,

01:08:21.32
Buddy
yeah that's a good point

01:08:21.67
Keith
Brown, but brown. Uh, what did you just call it?

01:08:23.78
Jeremy
The back door brown eye.

01:08:25.64
Keith
Backdoor brown eye and chocolate milk pee.

01:08:27.64
Jeremy
yeah

01:08:28.36
Keith
You're just, you're on a, you're on a roll tonight, Jeremy.

01:08:32.20
Jeremy
Yeah, it's it's common speak when you're in the army, so I guess it's kind of

01:08:35.26
Keith
You're disgusting. Your disgusting meter is not turned up right now.

01:08:38.52
Jeremy
No, no, i keep it I have to keep it down every once in a while.

01:08:44.33
Buddy
Oh my God. All right, here we go. I got a few more here. So it's a good idea to have some ski goggles with you or some kind of goggles. In case you get in a wide out situation or or a heavy snow, ah and you have to hoof it. you know Sometimes you choose to, hey, I can't get the car out. um I'm going to have to leave.

01:09:06.26
Buddy
you know if you If you make the choice that you're gonna have to go get help or leave your current situation because it's dire. you know you're not gonna The government's not gonna swoop in and and protect you and save you, then you might need the goggles just you know for the purposes that you know they serve. It's also a good practice for a neck gator. If you know what that is, you know what it is. but Just a piece of cloth that goes around your neck, you can put them on your head.

01:09:35.13
Buddy
You can do a lot of things with net gainers. You want bo with it what do you call it the brown eye the one eyebrow you can do many things with a net gainer.

01:09:44.70
Keith
the yeah The Top Spunker website is almost completed. Rhonda is working feverishly on it, and we've got neck gators on there.

01:09:50.80
Jeremy
Nice.

01:09:51.14
Buddy
Yeah, they they're phenomenal, man. You can do a lot of things with them. um one of the things Another thing that's is that I personally have is a smaller tarp and a poncho.

01:10:03.95
Buddy
in my in my vehicle and they serve you know ponchos are gonna keep you dry tarps gonna keep you dry if you need it to get out and and go hoof it throw that in your in your get home bag, you know, you can make a shelter out of it. There's a lot of different things you do with tarp and a poncho. It's kind of self explanatory, but you know, if you, if you need to understand what, you know, you don't know what the uses of a tarp or, or a poncho, you know, Google it or, you know, maybe I can do a whole podcast on it. Cause it's one of those things I can talk about for days. They've got many, many different uses. All right. The last thing I'll talk about is, is having yourself a,

01:10:45.33
Buddy
Radio and when I say radio i'm talking about a walkie talkie type radio something that's a dual band at least A bow thing is a good little radio for 20 bucks. You can get a bow thing radio And you can put in you can put in some channels in there to where you know, maybe if you have it Pre-programmed in there you can try to hit a repeater or you can make mayday mayday calls out on it and somebody might Actually hearing, you know, if a CB radio, if you get a handheld CB and you're on a ah highway or something, you might be able to reach out to somebody with that. You can also listen to NOAA weather radio channels off of the Bao Feng radio.

01:11:34.70
Buddy
which would be nice to know if you're in a blizzard or you get off the road, you know, turn it to where you can hear the weather to see if, you know, maybe there is a break in weather where you can go, you know, get out of the vehicle and and make a break for it. Or, hey, there's more snow coming. I think I'll stay here. So you'll be able to make some informed decisions with that, with your radio.

01:11:55.09
Buddy
um

01:11:58.26
Buddy
That is about it for my list. I know it's, you know,

01:12:03.38
Keith
Well, I should hope so, man.

01:12:06.55
Buddy
between your car.

01:12:06.76
Keith
Damn.

01:12:07.43
Buddy
Yeah. And between your car. One thing I'll say is with your book, with your, uh, one more thing.

01:12:10.63
Keith
you You mean, you mean one more thing you'll say.

01:12:14.44
Buddy
Yeah, I can, I'm full of one more things. So with your get home bag, um, a lot of things will fit in your get home bag and you want to pack it up and, and have it there and I would put your get home bag in a back seat if you can, if you can afford the space and stick your snow shovels and the rest of that in your trunk. But don't stick it all in your trunk and forget about it because you might get off the road into a snow bank and then you can't get out of your car. Okay. Cause you got into a bunch of deep snow and now you can't without busting a window out, crawl out of your car. So what are you going to do then?

01:12:51.46
Buddy
have your bug out back in the back seat so you can get to it. Now, stuff like snow shovel, and you might be able to get through, if you have a car, you might be able to get through the back seat, to the trunk through the back seat, and that's an option with certain cars. And then, ah you know you might need an SUV where it's all right there anyhow, or you know the back of the truck, you that's another thing.

01:13:14.60
Buddy
just Just keep in mind, you gotta you gotta be a free thinker here. you know Nobody loves you but you are better than, nobody loves you better than yourself. And so you you just need to make sure that you you're on top of your preps and and you know you you think through the problem and that's the key to survival, stick it through the problem.

01:13:27.76
Jeremy
No.

01:13:36.03
Keith
Nice. Nice work. Nice work, everybody. Good job.

01:13:40.71
Jeremy
All right.

01:13:43.31
Keith
um Any ah last words from anybody that you don't have to if you don't have it?

01:13:48.82
Jeremy
ah No, I'm i'm good.

01:13:49.08
Buddy
up

01:13:51.56
Buddy
Well, you know, I'll say one more thing.

01:13:53.44
Jeremy
yeah

01:13:53.85
Buddy
oh Yes.

01:13:55.03
Keith
Of course you do.

01:13:56.99
Buddy
I got one more thing to say. You know, I just ah would like to make a shout out to our, you know, people out across the, you know, podcast, podcast land out there, you know, we got international listeners.

01:14:08.14
Buddy
And so I'd like to shout out to them, you know, Ireland and and what do we have Germany and and Eastern Europe.

01:14:16.78
Keith
We would love for any of those folks to come on.

01:14:19.44
Buddy
Yeah, definitely. And I and to say, Hey, you know, and it is speak pipe still up.

01:14:21.08
Jeremy
Yeah.

01:14:25.85
Buddy
Is that still a thing?

01:14:26.60
Keith
It is, it is. Nobody uses it.

01:14:28.15
Buddy
Uh, yeah,

01:14:28.30
Keith
It's, it's, I got, I got the free one going. So I don't don't think you can talk longer than like two minutes, but yeah, i'm I'm running the free one now. I'm not going to pay for it if nobody's going to use it.

01:14:36.35
Buddy
yeah get out there and, and you speak pipe and, and give us your email address or, or.

01:14:42.33
Keith
Well, there's also one on ah but on the bunker Facebook group, but some kind of a recorded thing you can do there too, I think.

01:14:47.95
