Keith
So Jeremy, what is a hash brown casserole?
00:05:51.96
Jeremy
Oh, man, it's a tradition at this house.
00:05:53.74
Buddy
If you have to ask.
00:05:55.65
Jeremy
So hash brown casserole, it's, um you just, you get a
00:05:58.89
Keith
Explain that please in detail.
00:06:01.04
Jeremy
So you get a nice big bag of, you know, frozen frozen hash browns. um The ones from Walmart are like four, but they're four pound bags. So you can make a total of two because we like to have leftovers.
00:06:12.90
Jeremy
um So it's hash browns, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, onions if you want. I caramelize the onions first. That's how I roll.
00:06:23.53
Buddy
Oh, oh.
00:06:23.40
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:06:24.64
Buddy
oh
00:06:24.56
Jeremy
and then um melted butter. And um I actually like to take a bunch of bacon, dice it up into small pieces, fry it first, and then put it in while it's baking. Um, and then what you do is you, you leave your hash browns out for just a little bit, let them defrost, you know, kind of break up a little bit, put them in a great big bowl, put in, um, if you do a whole four pound bag, which we do, then you use the large can of condensed, uh, you know, the cream of chicken soup, put that whole thing in there.
00:06:56.90
Jeremy
Then you put a whole thing of, uh, uh, sour cream in there. And you get that good and mixed up. And then you take a whole stick of butter, melt it pour it in, and kind of mix all that together with the onions and the bacon. And you just make big, just a big you know sloppy mess of it, basically.
00:07:12.87
Buddy
My mouth's watering right now.
00:07:12.78
Jeremy
And then, um ah oh dude, it's bomb. um
00:07:17.53
Keith
It does sound good.
00:07:17.76
Jeremy
And then you I just split them up. I split them up between two casserole dishes. I top it with a little bit of seasoning. Like this time I put that special shit on there.
00:07:28.90
Jeremy
Sometimes I use Tony Thatcherie. Sometimes I'll use a mix of stuff. And then you in then you bake it for a good while and it starts to bubble up on the edges. Then I pull it back out.
00:07:40.15
Jeremy
I top it with more oak cheddar cheese. You mix in cheddar cheese while you're like mixing all the stuff together so the cheese is inside of it.
00:07:43.41
Buddy
and Oh, yeah.
00:07:48.93
Jeremy
And then once it starts to bubble up on the edges, I pull it out a little bit. I put more cheddar cheese on top, push it back in, let it go for about another 10, 15 minutes, turn off the oven and let it rest and then smash it
00:08:03.34
Jeremy
Which, right after we're done recording, I will be smashing ah said casserole. So, yes.
00:08:08.88
Buddy
Damn. Damn. Damn.
00:08:11.11
Keith
wow
00:08:11.92
Jeremy
And then today, i we were out in the garden working. Our carrots. Dude, these carrots make me just angry. Stupid angry. But what we were able to get is... We'll just call them growers, not showers.
00:08:26.79
Jeremy
um
00:08:27.25
Buddy
Oh,
00:08:29.34
Jeremy
They were... they were
00:08:32.25
Keith
Oh, dude, you got to wait slice as so I'm not hitting ah hitting the freaking vape when you do that.
00:08:32.15
Jeremy
they were
00:08:36.82
Keith
That hurts my lungs.
00:08:38.03
Jeremy
yeah they yeah
00:08:41.03
Buddy
oh
00:08:40.86
Jeremy
They were a little they're a little small, not going to lie. And you know Missy pulled all of them out, and she said, and she's like, look, look at these. And I was like, I feel attacked, not going to lie. um But we took like the tops, the green tops, off of all of the carrots, and I made a carrot top pesto today.
00:09:01.20
Jeremy
So, yep, pretty good amount.
00:09:02.43
Buddy
Ooh.
00:09:05.15
Jeremy
And all that is, is we washed the carrot tops really good. You want to get rid of some of the harder ah stems. You just wash them really, really well. I put them into the food processor.
00:09:18.00
Jeremy
I put almost, it's a small smallish bag of pine nuts. Almost the whole thing of pine nuts in there. ah probably about a cup or so of Parmesan cheese, um some lemon juice, kosher salt.
00:09:37.15
Jeremy
And you start to, for what I do is I blend, I like hit the processor and I let it go in some garlic, by the way, we use minced garlics and you just process that up a little bit. And then as it's going, I start adding olive oil and it turns it into this thick, thick paste.
00:09:54.23
Jeremy
And it is fricking delicious and you can put it on everything.
00:09:57.26
Keith
Mm-hmm.
00:09:59.77
Jeremy
And it's kind of like the, base the basil, uh, cause last year we made basil pesto and we were, you know, every part of the the carrot is edible.
00:10:00.09
Buddy
wow
00:10:09.48
Jeremy
So from the whole carrot part, uh, to the actual greens are edible. Same thing with radishes. We, we actually, um, cause our radishes, i don't know what we're doing wrong with them, but We had gigantic, you know, radish tops, which we actually ended up cutting, washing, and then we put them into a salad. They have ah a natural kind of spice to them.
00:10:29.95
Jeremy
So those are really good. But we have, I don't know what we're doing wrong with these stupid but radishes. They're just not, they're not making radishes.
00:10:36.86
Buddy
You know, my, my girlfriend the other day, we had, we went to the farmer's market and got some turnips and radishes and she took, she took those and she, we were making salsa and we had some washing on side and she just grabs a couple and throws them in there.
00:10:42.02
Jeremy
Mm-hmm.
00:10:50.03
Buddy
And I'm like, what are you doing? She goes, I just want to try something. That was great, man. You'd really get a taste of turnips at all. just made it a little crunchy, but the, the radish, you know, how it kind of,
00:11:01.50
Buddy
it's It's a little warm a lot of times, a little hot. And it was weird on the, because of the, you know, jalapenos, you kind of get it on the mid-tongue or whatever.
00:11:11.89
Buddy
This was like on the backside of it all.
00:11:12.35
Jeremy
yeah
00:11:14.68
Buddy
So it it was it was interesting. It was like nice and crunchy. And and i said, definitely do it again. But it's kind like, well, what are you doing? And she put them in there and it worked out. So.
00:11:24.97
Jeremy
Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of of turnips, nor am I a huge fan of um a what's it called?
00:11:35.35
Jeremy
Rad, no beats. Yeah, beats.
00:11:37.17
Buddy
Oh man, beets. yeah it tastes like the dirt is growing in, but I like beets, man. I take a beet supplement and drink beet juice and some other things. so
00:11:46.42
Jeremy
Yeah, the beat powder, I do have that. I will use that, but I have to stomach it down like not a gigantic fan.
00:11:51.74
Buddy
Yeah.
00:11:54.42
Buddy
Yeah, with a little butter and some pepper and salt, it's not too bad.
00:11:57.81
Jeremy
yeah
00:11:58.50
Buddy
But it is what it is, man.
00:11:59.51
Keith
Beet powder. what what What is it? are you taking it? What's it for?
00:12:05.16
Jeremy
Beets. So the concept is is that you, um you know, the concept of you are what you eat. So when you look at food and you think about what it looks like, a beet, you know, really red, really deep, deep, deep red.
00:12:21.04
Jeremy
Beets are extremely good for your circulatory pathways. It's good for your heart. Um, it will actually help cleanse your, your cardio pathways.
00:12:32.60
Jeremy
I just hate the taste of it so much. Um, so they do have a beat, uh, a beetroot powder though.
00:12:36.53
Buddy
Yeah.
00:12:40.98
Jeremy
So it's literally just dried, uh, powdered up beets and you can add it to, and you know, anything you want and you're still getting the benefit of the beets. You just don't have to stomach the taste.
00:12:52.75
Jeremy
It's just, I can't stand beets. I hate the way they taste.
00:12:56.17
Buddy
yeah It's supposed to have a whole night help you with nitric oxide in your bloodstream. And then if you have high blood pressure and some heart, different heart conditions, supposed to help out with that, but.
00:13:00.70
Jeremy
Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:05.48
Jeremy
yeah Beets are legitimately a superfood. They're like extremely good for you, but I just hate the taste.
00:13:10.36
Keith
That's good because were our beats are doing really good. I've never had them before, but our beats are doing really good. Super good.
00:13:17.26
Jeremy
Now um I will say this. i it's been probably the better part of 20 plus years since I've had them. So maybe my taste has changed. I just have not been able to bring myself to try them again.
00:13:33.24
Jeremy
I've always been told that they're supposed to be sweet, you know, and all these other things. I just, it's just not my jam.
00:13:39.36
Buddy
what you You can pickle them too. So, I mean, that's, that's another thing.
00:13:42.36
Jeremy
Yeah. Yeah. Now I know you can pickle them because um i know one of the things I want to do
00:13:44.75
Buddy
So some people that won't eat them will pickle them. So, you know,
00:13:49.83
Jeremy
Yeah. like It is so weird because I love pickled almost everything, like pickled onions, pickled okra.
00:13:57.16
Buddy
Oh, you, this I had some pickle asparagus the other day.
00:13:58.19
Jeremy
Oh, dude, I've got – well, my my daughter asked me to buy because I i do my asparagus a certain way.
00:13:59.68
Buddy
I was like, Holy shit. I'm in love. That stuff was great.
00:14:07.97
Jeremy
And I was like, I can't believe I'm having to buy asparagus. But our asparagus in the garden in its, it's going through its phases. But next year is our crop year. And I can't wait. But I'm like, it, I'm having to buy asparagus. And that makes me angry.
00:14:25.26
Buddy
Yeah. Well, when you move, you're going to have all that to buy.
00:14:27.31
Jeremy
All right.
00:14:29.40
Buddy
don't know how much it'll move over.
00:14:30.48
Keith
It's true.
00:14:32.05
Buddy
You might be able to take your asparagus if you have an established plant.
00:14:32.17
Keith
Yeah.
00:14:34.33
Buddy
You might be able take it with you.
00:14:35.44
Jeremy
Oh, ah we're going to try to take literally everything. I mean, everything I'll dig up a dam. As a matter of fact, we have wild blueberry bushes and blackberry bushes all around us. and We've been going ham on these things.
00:14:48.26
Jeremy
And I was talking with Missy and and she was like, you know, we we're digging up those bushes. Right. And I was like, oh, yes, ma'am, we are.
00:14:53.00
Buddy
Huh, huh.
00:14:54.02
Jeremy
Yeah, we're definitely doing that.
00:14:56.13
Buddy
Yeah, you might look into the grafting, you know, just take a good cutting and and graft them and see if that works too.
00:15:01.70
Jeremy
Well, I figure if I can dig them up and put them in a bucket with a little bit of supplementation and give them a good soaking, bring them over and then put them because um we've learned a little bit about like the berry bushes because we've got ours right now that we bought in buckets.
00:15:09.05
Buddy
Yeah.
00:15:19.06
Jeremy
And of course they're new. They're not, they're not established yet, but these ones that are growing out wild all around us, they're growing in sand. And this spot that we found has a buttload of it. So I'm going to put them where there's, you know, normally at, and I'm going to, I'm going to try and transplant as much of them as I possibly can.
00:15:40.15
Buddy
Yeah, blueberries don't do well here because we don't have the acidic soil that it needs.
00:15:40.38
Jeremy
Oh.
00:15:44.18
Buddy
But, man, sand plums and blackberries, shit, it's a damn weed, man, all over the place.
00:15:45.01
Jeremy
Hmm.
00:15:50.03
Jeremy
Hmm.
00:15:50.90
Buddy
But I love some sand plum jelly, man.
00:15:50.85
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:15:53.64
Buddy
Put some sand plum jelly and do some jalapenos in there.
00:15:56.12
Keith
Sand plum. Never heard of that before.
00:15:58.07
Buddy
Oh, man, it's it's a hidden secret, man. I can send you I'll pick some and make some jelly and maybe and send it to you or whatever. We we we make it to where um it's in like packages.
00:16:06.23
Jeremy
Hmm. Hmm.
00:16:10.63
Buddy
It's ah condensed down to where you just basically add water and make send it through the I think it's like a juice, I guess is what I want to say.
00:16:23.02
Buddy
ah concentrate that you can make, you can make from the concentrate, you can make the jelly fairly easy.
00:16:23.23
Jeremy
Interesting. Hmm.
00:16:27.74
Buddy
So, yep.
00:16:28.75
Jeremy
Nice.
00:16:29.94
Buddy
Oh, now I'm all this food talk. I'm hungry.
00:16:32.92
Jeremy
Hell yeah. That's my kind of language.
00:16:36.57
Buddy
Yep.
00:16:38.35
Keith
All right, gents. ah So we got this get home challenge. I'm not really sure what we called it, but that's what we got. um I'm wondering, well, I'll tell you what, buddy, why don't you describe it or explain it it first?
00:16:55.44
Buddy
All right, we're we're we decided to do a get home.
00:16:57.87
Keith
Hold on, hold on. Before, before we start, let's, I'm going to try something ah where if you guys could just pull back away from the mic about an inch or two.
00:16:59.17
Buddy
Yeah.
00:17:09.25
Keith
I'm going to try something this week because I'm having a problem with the sound where it feels like it's just too on overdrive. I think it's just our voices are too close to the microphones like this.
00:17:20.85
Keith
So it's like if you just, you know, if you're used to doing like four inches, do like maybe six inches away and and see if that helps.
00:17:26.54
Buddy
Okay. Yeah.
00:17:26.50
Jeremy
That's what she said.
00:17:29.08
Keith
i can like I can boost it later.
00:17:29.14
Buddy
Yeah.
00:17:29.02
Jeremy
yeah I slipped that right on in there.
00:17:34.36
Buddy
say, a $78?
00:17:36.68
Keith
I don't remember the last time she said it, but I'm sure she said it one time. So we'll see.
00:17:39.58
Jeremy
Yeah. Oh, goodness.
00:17:43.71
Keith
All right.
00:17:43.83
Buddy
ah say did we do ah seventy eight dollars Is that what we did?
00:17:47.26
Keith
Yeah.
00:17:47.17
Jeremy
Yes.
00:17:48.69
Keith
Yeah.
00:17:49.62
Buddy
and And do we want to do a scenario where I send you a script or whatever and you put it in the show? She'll know us where. um Okay.
00:17:57.13
Jeremy
yeah I think I you just just describe it.
00:18:01.09
Buddy
And then see if we can get.
00:18:01.74
Keith
Wait, do do you have a script?
00:18:03.72
Buddy
I can do one fairly quick. I mean.
00:18:07.03
Keith
Because I could put one in the voice, man.
00:18:09.16
Buddy
As soon as we're done, I'll i'll give you a script in about.
00:18:10.40
Jeremy
Oh, yeah, that that that deep radio voice.
00:18:13.69
Keith
Yeah, could definitely something like that.
00:18:14.52
Buddy
I like that, man. It's especially when you, eat that one, you're clowning, clowning buddy a little bit. So we could have the adventures of buddy again. ah
00:18:23.36
Jeremy
Either that one or or the one where you were like, and he realized he muted himself.
00:18:24.40
Buddy
so
00:18:29.03
Buddy
yeah
00:18:30.97
Jeremy
That was pretty good.
00:18:31.35
Buddy
So anyway, yeah, I'll, I'll whip something up within as soon as we get done within about an hour.
00:18:31.61
Jeremy
I wasn't expecting that.
00:18:37.65
Buddy
or So I'll send it.
00:18:41.04
Buddy
And we can go from there. You can church it up if you want.
00:18:44.35
Keith
Church it up.
00:18:44.40
Buddy
You see, church it up. So I tell Jay all the time. He's like, okay, you want me to take out all the curse words or what? And i' like, yeah.
00:18:54.67
Keith
$78 was not really, mean, it works, but you gotta, you gotta squeeze stuff in there, you know, and half it was right.
00:18:56.56
Buddy
Dude, I, I struggled.
00:19:00.71
Keith
So go ahead. Explain, explain the get home challenge.
00:19:04.89
Buddy
All right. We decided to do a get home challenge. Basically, there is some kind of event that keeps you that that the grid goes down and you're away from your bug out bag and you need to get home.
00:19:18.01
Buddy
So you've got to make do with what you got or maybe dip into a local store that's, you know, that you can get into that's possibly still open and walk in with the cash have in your pocket.
00:19:19.58
Keith
Thank you.
00:19:31.06
Buddy
to buy a few items to get you home. And so the scenario here is $78 is what you have in your pocket. And you've got to go 35 plus miles home to get to your house.
00:19:46.33
Buddy
And you have no bug out bag. You don't really have the normal stuff you would have that would be in your car. So, you're going to make do with what what you have and what you can acquire along the way.
00:19:59.69
Buddy
And so we we looked at two three different stores. We looked at a Walmart that could possibly be open. I went to a Ace Hardware, a hardware store, to go in there and see what I could gather.
00:20:13.60
Buddy
And then we did, what was the third one we did?
00:20:20.51
Jeremy
Dollar General.
00:20:21.04
Buddy
Wow.
00:20:21.45
Keith
So you're out there in the world.
00:20:22.27
Buddy
Dollar store.
00:20:23.60
Keith
So dollar store.
00:20:23.65
Buddy
Dollar store. Yep.
00:20:24.72
Keith
Yeah. Dollar general. That's, that's me. Uh, so you're out there in the world and shit just totally go sideways. You're not really prepared. You might have what, like your knife on you or something like that.
00:20:37.70
Keith
And you got to get home. How far home to, I mean, how far to get home?
00:20:41.77
Buddy
35 miles, you know.
00:20:42.47
Keith
All right, so 35 miles to get home. You have no vehicle and you have no supplies.
00:20:46.72
Buddy
No, no.
00:20:48.44
Keith
You don't have your kit with you. Let's say you're that you were you're out with a buddy or something, whatever it may be, and then your buddy just died. Whoever, whatever. And you got to get home and you got basically nothing. But right there in front of you is a Dollar General or a Walmart or an Ace Hardware or something like that.
00:21:05.73
Keith
And you've got $78 in your pocket. We're not counting tax. $78 in your pocket. What do you get to get yourself home safely?
00:21:14.76
Buddy
Exactly.
00:21:15.67
Jeremy
and We do have our EDC, correct?
00:21:16.41
Keith
Wow.
00:21:21.20
Keith
I'm saying yes.
00:21:21.42
Buddy
Yeah. Yes, if you were, if like, for for instance, and I'll go over what what I wear, but yes, you have your your your pocket dump EDC and and and, you know, if you, every day, if you walk around with an AR-15 on your back, you know, we'll have to, just well, we'll disqualify that a little bit because, you know, but, you know, just a reasonable EDC.
00:21:22.88
Jeremy
OK.
00:21:38.65
Keith
her
00:21:43.21
Buddy
So, no.
00:21:44.41
Keith
Right.
00:21:44.36
Jeremy
So you don't EDC a 20-foot rope or are you a UAV.
00:21:45.04
Keith
Okay.
00:21:47.75
Jeremy
Okay.
00:21:48.61
Buddy
and know
00:21:48.61
Keith
but Exactly.
00:21:49.93
Buddy
no
00:21:49.78
Jeremy
yeah
00:21:51.89
Buddy
Now you can make one if you go and buy it from the dollar store, you know, enough, uh, whatever, you know, MacGyver it.
00:21:54.40
Jeremy
Right, right.
00:21:58.63
Buddy
So, yeah. And so this challenge is, is to get you to think, you know, you, you don't have a million dollars to go in and buy. That'd be easy. You know, we could have said 130, 550 That would too easy. have $78.
00:22:10.84
Buddy
that would be too easy you have seventy eight dollars So you have to think a little bit. I know with my list, I went through it. I looked at my list. I checked it once. I checked it twice. I threw stuff out. I added stuff in and it just got crazy.
00:22:22.34
Jeremy
mm-hmm yep
00:22:23.75
Buddy
But it was it was hard, man. It was challenging. And i i think that this would be a good drill for people out there, you know, to to go try it, man.
00:22:34.14
Buddy
yeah Go to at your local dollar store, go to a Walmart or when you're at those places, look around and see what they would have that you could grab. Because times times are tough, man.
00:22:47.24
Buddy
I mean, the things are going on. heard of a girl that was stuck in a riot.
00:22:49.22
Keith
Mm-hmm.
00:22:53.14
Buddy
She worked in one of the places in California. that was There was a riot and couldn't get home. So what do you do then? you know couldn't go to her She couldn't get to her car.
00:23:01.64
Jeremy
Yep.
00:23:03.64
Buddy
Her car was in a car ah a garage. Couldn't get to it. um you know What do you do from there? So... so it's ah It's going to be a ah thinking person's game from that point.
00:23:16.71
Buddy
So, you know, we can tell you what to put in your bug out bag. We can tell you what to do, but you really need to think through the problem and use what you can.
00:23:23.74
Jeremy
Yep.
00:23:25.62
Keith
Right. And so we're asking the listeners to to do this, do this this week, or and they can get back with us on on Facebook or they can, however they want to do it, they can get back with us or they can just do it on their own and not get back with us. Fine. But we're going to tell you what we did for ourselves tonight.
00:23:41.91
Buddy
And we'll, and we'll, we'll just put a posting up on, on Facebook and, and have people, you know, cut and paste what they got on there and to see.
00:23:42.16
Jeremy
Yeah. yep
00:23:45.85
Jeremy
yeah
00:23:50.44
Buddy
And we compare notes. I mean, ah some people might have, you know, have a clue, come up with something you didn't think of. So that, and that's what we're trying to do.
00:24:01.44
Buddy
We're trying to think you through the problem and, and learn from other people too. So.
00:24:06.01
Keith
Right.
00:24:05.99
Jeremy
Yeah, and i I think it's also important that if you don't want to spend, you know, real bucks, um do it virtually and find out just how quickly $78 will roll right on out.
00:24:17.12
Buddy
Yeah, i love that I left that part out.
00:24:17.37
Jeremy
It's super, super fast.
00:24:20.08
Buddy
I used Monopoly money, and the guy looked at me funny when I was cashing out.
00:24:22.77
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:24:23.08
Buddy
but
00:24:23.38
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:24:24.69
Buddy
No, it was good. I actually i went in to explain. I explained to the people there at this little hardware store. a mom and pop thing in this town and and walked in.
00:24:31.79
Jeremy
yeah
00:24:33.88
Buddy
I was like, hey, this is what I do. This is what I'm doing. They're like, oh, wow, that's pretty cool. So, you know, we might have some new listeners now, so.
00:24:42.74
Keith
Nice.
00:24:42.85
Jeremy
Nice.
00:24:43.48
Keith
That's awesome.
00:24:43.68
Jeremy
Very nice. All right. So how are we kicking this off?
00:24:47.96
Keith
Well, one of you guys go first.
00:24:50.87
Buddy
Jeremy.
00:24:50.72
Jeremy
All right.
00:24:51.03
Buddy
jeremy
00:24:52.24
Jeremy
Surely. So what I did first is I had to think about this from, you know, um a realistic point. I do have a lot more EDC on me these days, especially after my foolish blunder in the mountains during Hurricane Helene.
00:25:08.98
Jeremy
um But when I started thinking about how can I spend $78 and make it home, and I'll preface this by saying 35 miles for a person who is conditioned to walk or you know jog or do both of 35 miles isn't such a huge ordeal. my my Missy and I, are we in the past have done multiple, multiple long distance ultra marathon type runs.
00:25:36.77
Jeremy
So 35 miles for me may not be the same as 35 miles, say for, um you know, ah the standard person who's out, you know, be bopping around town.
00:25:49.33
Jeremy
Um, the location that I picked from where I would be at to make, make the miles, uh, is, it's a little town called Fuquay Verena. Um, and here in North Carolina.
00:26:02.25
Jeremy
And the most direct route back to my house is exactly 35.1 miles. Now, according to Google, it would take about 12 hours and 43 minutes just walking at a standard pace.
00:26:17.14
Jeremy
I would say if it was me and I was not constrained, I could probably do it and probably a lot less than that. um depending on whether or not I had to stay out a night, you know, because not everybody can go a full, you know, 35 plus miles without having to like take ah a day.
00:26:35.48
Jeremy
Um, and so how I broke mine down is using the 10 C's of survival. Uh, originally this was done by Dave Canterbury, you know, quite some time ago, but the 10 C's are cutting tool, combustion device, cover or shelter container, cordage, candling, which is a light source, cotton material, cargo tape, um, which also can be for, um ah cordage, you know, um compass and a canvas needle.
00:27:03.80
Jeremy
So that's a general list. So how I got mine done is if I walked into the Walmart and I had this amount of cash, you know, minus the stuff that I normally have on me for my EDC, which is a folding pocket knife, my pistol, two magazines, a light, and a multi-tool, and a cat tee tourniquet.
00:27:24.27
Jeremy
Those are my bare minimums. So I wanted something to carry all this crap. So I found a backpack. um and And then these are all the Walmart brand, ah mostly.
00:27:37.31
Jeremy
So this is the container. So this particular backpack costs $14.97, made by Ozark Trail. It's a 14 liter day pack. So found that. ah fourteen liter or fourteen liter day um so i found that Next thing I needed, because I do know what it's like to go that kind of distance and I know what happens with my feet.
00:27:56.34
Jeremy
um They have a semi-ineexpensive pair of socks. They're compression socks, which are important for me. It's a three-pack, $10.48. And forty eight cents um and when you think about clothing also, you have to think of it kind of in the in the line of of it's also shelter in a way.
00:28:17.82
Jeremy
um I normally do wear hats, but in this particular instance, I thought, what if I didn't have a hat? um I found a, it's it's again from Walmart. George is the brand. It's a men's solid cotton twill hat for $5.98, color black.
00:28:34.48
Jeremy
color of black Cordage, um Walmart sells a generic type of 550 paracord. It is a total of 50 feet for $4.84. And next,
00:28:52.49
Jeremy
I thought about Shelter. um They have a, and this is the one of the things that I didn't want to have to settle for because of the color. It's blue. But if you think about if you were trying to get back home and you needed to take a night, if you dipped into the woods in the evening and you know got yourself set up, seeing blue in the dark is you know fairly difficult.
00:29:14.86
Jeremy
um It is a light-duty tarp. It's made by HyperTuff, which is a Walmart brand. It's a 6x8 tarp ah for $4.66. And you can use your 550 cord to get it attached to the trees that you need to set up.
00:29:32.26
Jeremy
ah Next, your candling. i want to I want to emphasize that I like redundancies. So I found the Ozark Trail brand, which is a Walmart brand. um It's a 100 lumen LED headlamp.
00:29:48.63
Jeremy
ah It takes AAA batteries. for four dollars and 78 cents and to go along with that i did find some triple a batteries as a just in case um they have the uh walmart brand great value ah they have a three pack uh in store uh of these batteries they're triple a for three dollars and 77 cents which is
00:30:08.30
Keith
Hey, are you there?
00:30:12.99
Keith
I think you cut out.
00:30:13.11
Jeremy
which is
00:30:14.64
Keith
ah Buddy, are you still there?
00:30:16.20
Buddy
yeah I'm still here.
00:30:17.46
Keith
think you cut out like ah back when you said and to go along with and of a sudden you cut out.
00:30:22.71
Jeremy
Can hear me?
00:30:24.34
Keith
Yeah.
00:30:25.48
Jeremy
All right. um Yeah, I can hear you.
00:30:27.08
Keith
And you can hear us, right?
00:30:29.06
Jeremy
Can hear me?
00:30:29.79
Keith
you You were talking about your headlit your headlamp and then you said and to go along with and you cut out.
00:30:30.12
Jeremy
Okay.
00:30:34.55
Jeremy
Okay. Okay. um And I'll just pick it up from there. And to go along with the headlamp, um I did find some AAA batteries as a just-in-case. um Walmart brand, which is great value. They have three-pack of AAA batteries for $3.77. And then a couple of more things, nuanced things, but I wanted to go real heavy on water.
00:31:02.45
Jeremy
And one of the um one of the seas of survival, and when he talks about container, it's also a container for water, not just a container to hold your stuff, but you need a container to hold water.
00:31:16.84
Jeremy
um They have the Deer Park brand spring water. This is a six pack of the 25.7 fluid ounce bottles. There's a squeezy bottles.
00:31:29.52
Jeremy
Excuse me for $2 and 47 cents. So in my thinking, I've got this backpack. I can put two on the sides and then i can tank one immediately to get some fluids in me and then put the rest in my backpack.
00:31:44.77
Jeremy
Um, and then to keep up my hydration, um I've talked about it before, but they actually started selling element in Walmart. um
00:31:54.51
Buddy
Nice.
00:31:55.24
Jeremy
Yeah, I know, right? I saw them in the store. I was like, oh my God, they're here. um they have a ah They have a different they have a couple different choices, but in this particular instance, they have the six count packs.
00:32:12.82
Jeremy
I like the watermelon the best, and it is $8.97, which You know, in reality for a hydration mix, you know, that is, that's kind of expensive to some people, but if you've ever used them, they're totally worth it.
00:32:29.29
Jeremy
Um, and so for calories element, L M N T.
00:32:31.50
Keith
Oh, and what are those called?
00:32:34.86
Keith
oh the elements. Okay, gotcha. Yep.
00:32:36.26
Jeremy
Yeah, they're very salty.
00:32:36.67
Keith
Mm-hmm.
00:32:37.66
Jeremy
Some people don't like them because they are so salty, but the big myth of salt is it's exactly what it is. It's a myth. Yeah. You need more salt in your life, most likely not less.
00:32:49.05
Jeremy
um And there's many, many different benefits to salt as we can go into later. But I, um when I crashed out a while back when I was on contract, I chugged.
00:33:01.00
Jeremy
But I've never done it before, but I chugged two of these back to back and I was glorious after that. um But for calories within the seas of survival, um and I do know how much I consume calorie wise when I'm doing ultras.
00:33:18.40
Jeremy
Um, so i went ahead and I added in a, uh, nature Valley fruit and nut trail mix, um, six bars for $2 and 97 cents.
00:33:30.99
Jeremy
And I also added the nature Valley sweet and salty, uh, turtle, uh, ganola bars. Uh, it's another six pack for $2 97 cents. Um, so um And some of the nuanced things, um petroleum jelly.
00:33:47.93
Jeremy
lot I know other people hear it and they're like, ooh, gross. Why would you have Vaseline? Vaseline is actually great for a couple different things. One, um it helps you start a fire if you know what you're doing because it is a petroleum product.
00:34:00.55
Jeremy
But also, if you've never gone a significant amount of distance on your feet while a little panicky possibly depending on the time of year and physical exertion,
00:34:11.99
Jeremy
you will chafe in areas that you didn't know existed. And if you use petroleum jelly or you use anti-chafing cream and you put it in those places that rub together, um it will help you keep that chafing down significantly. And if you've ever if you've ever had severe chafing or heat, prickly heat or anything like that, you know how extremely painful it can be just to take a step.
00:34:39.92
Jeremy
And it will put you down. It will. um And a lot of people don't realize that. you know you You've got to you got of keep the body lubricated in other places, not just water. um So that's my that's my rundown um on how I did it.
00:34:55.61
Jeremy
And ah the total sum for my list came out to with tax. a Subtotal was $72.81.
00:35:08.70
Jeremy
Taxes $4.24 for an estimated total of $77.05. So came in with $0.95 to spare. that is how did mine. Yeah, because don't math so good, so had to make sure I did that.
00:35:17.94
Keith
Very nice.
00:35:18.60
Jeremy
five cents to spare so that is how i did mine
00:35:22.75
Keith
And you did, ah I didn't, mean i I didn't include tax on my, so you did yours with tax.
00:35:29.62
Jeremy
yeah
00:35:30.15
Keith
Actually, no, I did.
00:35:30.30
Jeremy
yeah cause
00:35:30.87
Keith
I did include tax. I did include tax. Yes, I did.
00:35:32.97
Jeremy
yeah cause i don't math i don't math so good or so i had to make sure i did that
00:35:33.60
Keith
Sorry.
00:35:39.38
Keith
You don't math to get her.
00:35:41.06
Jeremy
No, no, I do not.
00:35:45.13
Jeremy
All right, buddy, what does he do?
00:35:45.84
Keith
All right. Buddy, you are up.
00:35:50.55
Buddy
Hey, I'm going to punt to you because I got a dog barking. So, yeah.
00:35:53.97
Keith
You're going put to me.
00:35:54.99
Buddy
yeah
00:35:55.51
Keith
Okay.
00:35:58.42
Keith
Now hear the dog. Yeah. um Okay. So what type of a ah order should, do I go in? um I'll tell you what I just start with.
00:36:08.39
Jeremy
but I would just sling it.
00:36:08.84
Keith
Well,
00:36:09.57
Jeremy
Just sling it, man.
00:36:10.47
Keith
Just sling it. Yep. All right. Well, going start with the pack and then I'm going to sling it. um So I, I had to go to dollar general cause that's all that was between me and where I live. And that's what was in front of me.
00:36:21.74
Keith
Now the problem with dollar general is what for one, you're a lucky dog. ah Jeremy by getting to have Walmart cause Walmart's the bomb when it comes to that kind of stuff, you have to get very, very creative.
00:36:32.10
Jeremy
Yeah,
00:36:35.35
Keith
can go to dollar general. ah For instance, backpacks, no, there's no backpacks. They've got like little kitty packs, you know, um that you can fit like a book in it, you know, that that sort of thing.
00:36:49.10
Keith
But I did find a Polar Pack ah cooler backpack. So it's kind of lined and it's the one that that has the most amount of room in it. It didn't really have liters, but it had size wise.
00:37:01.58
Keith
ah So at 18 inches tall by nine by 10 was not too bad and zipper pockets on the outside. That's the inside. And then zipper pockets on the outside. but That would have to work. So I got that came in at 10 bucks.
00:37:19.05
Keith
All right. So from there, i went to, I'm going to go ahead and kick off, uh, water off the list. So I went ahead and got a, um, just a ah regular bottle of water 15 count.
00:37:30.42
Keith
Um, these are uh, the smaller water bottles, but there's, there's 15 of them. And I just figured with smaller bottles, I could, I could fit them into various places, pockets. So, you know, zipper packs anywhere in that, in that thing, I could fit them instead of one large, you know,
00:37:49.12
Keith
gallon size, that would be stupid. So that's why I got that water. that's ah That's important. I don't want to have to filter water you know out there. Oh, and I guess i I should say that my EDC is I always carry a pocket knife.
00:37:57.54
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:38:01.42
Keith
It's always sharp. And I always carry a flashlight and my pistol. I always have a hat and I always have a belt. So ah those things are pretty much EDC as far as I'm concerned.
00:38:13.08
Keith
So I've already got that. So now I've got my water. I've got my pack. Let's go ahead and move on to one Bic lighter. It's $1.95. What is that dog barking?
00:38:24.54
Keith
Who's that? Is that you?
00:38:25.71
Jeremy
That might be me.
00:38:27.72
Keith
It's you.
00:38:27.78
Jeremy
i think i think I think the autism is striking pretty hard downstairs.
00:38:33.25
Keith
Okay. So $1.95 for a Bic lighter. And I didn't get the the multi-pack. One will do for a trip home.
00:38:39.90
Jeremy
Yeah. Yeah.
00:38:40.38
Keith
I also picked up, and this was probably more of a luxury, but I picked up, um where are they on my list? Right there. They're Kingsford Quick Light Fire Starters, a 14-pack. They're little, tiny, little pucks that you can start fires with.
00:38:57.85
Jeremy
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:38:59.37
Keith
And, you know, they're for they're for like barbecuing, but it's a tiny little pack, very, very lightweight, and they're five bucks. So I figured lighter that I'm good to go. ah Now, if I had to boil water, of course, I don't have a pot or pan, but I'm sure you know how and I know how to string up a water bottle to boil water in a water bottle.
00:39:22.00
Keith
So ah I didn't have to get a pot and pan kind of ah a setup. Some people would would probably choose that. But again, Dollar General doesn't have it. They don't even have pots like the at best. You got like some cookie sheets and stuff.
00:39:37.67
Keith
You know, so ah but yeah, but but, you know, anybody who's who's seen ah a few bushcrafting videos knows that you can take a water bottle and you can actually hang it over a fire and you can boil water in it.
00:39:50.14
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:39:50.56
Keith
So ah you know that that would be my way of of boiling water. That's something you want to live on because you're going to get leaching of plastics, but you can boil the water if you want to.
00:39:58.82
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:39:59.42
Keith
If you wanted to heat it up.
00:39:59.42
Jeremy
Very carefully.
00:40:01.49
Keith
very carefully. Uh, if you want to heat it up and I do want to heat it up because for my food meals, I've got three of the, uh, I'm not even sure this brand's probably some Chinese brand, uh, Nissen hot and spicy firework, sizzling, rich pork bowl.
00:40:20.92
Keith
It's basically one of those ramen cups, you know,
00:40:20.99
Jeremy
Hell yeah. Hell yeah, man, that's Nissan.
00:40:25.53
Keith
And he said, okay, there you go. Uh, I mean, it looks great. It's got fire all over it. So, you know, I got three of those and, um, they came in at $6, 45 cents for all three.
00:40:36.42
Keith
And you can boy, you can put the water in the cup and eat it out of it. Okay. Uh, I did not get any utensils. They did not fit on my, my deal, but I can slurp it down. It's not a big deal.
00:40:47.91
Keith
I also got ah three packs that are six packs each. That's 18 individual Cliff bars. These are the Cliff Kid Z bars.
00:41:00.71
Keith
They're chocolate chip, ah the whole grain. It's an energy bar. They're not that big, but there's 18 of them. and I only have to get home. So as far as I'm concerned, I've got the calories. Plus, I get a lot of calories around my waist.
00:41:16.01
Keith
ah So there you go. I did get ah two packs. They were a dollar each of the drink mixes.
00:41:26.96
Keith
Now, I couldn't. Dollar General, again, they don't have anything that's like camping or hiking. It's all just like kid stuff, you know. So there wasn't any electrolyte kind of powders. But they did have Welch's grape and Welch's cherry pomegranate.
00:41:43.33
Keith
you know, packs of little powder that you pour into the water bottles. And there you go. That's your drink.
00:41:49.23
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:41:52.50
Keith
So I got two of those at 16. I'm sorry. That's, that's 12. I got some poly rope. ah The best I can find was a 25 foot of poly rope.
00:42:02.86
Keith
It has a 250 weight on it, which I would need because I'm not climbing any mountains. But 25 feet, I went ahead. They were only, so and I think they were $3.75 piece. So I bought two of them.
00:42:20.75
Keith
Didn't know if I would need an extra one. um I also got a throw blanket. It is a 60 by 50 throw blanket with the sleepy cat pattern on it.
00:42:34.24
Keith
Because at Dollar General, they don't have anything cool for men. It's all for kids. So this is pink. And yes, there are cats sleeping on it.
00:42:45.17
Keith
Okay. Let's get, let's move.
00:42:45.81
Jeremy
Hey man, it's 2025. We don't judge here
00:42:48.40
Buddy
Hey, but as long as it works, right?
00:42:50.66
Keith
Let's move past it. Of course I got a ah pro essential standard tarp. It's a eight by 10. It's the biggest one that they had and it was 10 25. And I think that's the most expensive thing on my list is the tarp.
00:43:05.63
Keith
um But you know what, when it comes to shelter, ah that I would spend 1050 on a tarp if I had to. I don't have a problem with that. ah Moving right along, um I have three things, I believe, left on my list here.
00:43:20.27
Keith
ah One is a package, a 50 count of of ah personal care, ultra clean flushable wipes. They can be used for, well, wiping your ass for one, but also cleaning if you need to. If you get a cut, you can clean with it, you know that sort of thing. So you got a cleaning deal.
00:43:38.34
Keith
Um, pro tip, you can also use them. Uh, once you, once they're flushed out, you can actually use them to, uh, filter your water as well. ah if need be not, not for, uh, protozoa, but for, you know, sand and debris, that kind of stuff.
00:43:54.34
Keith
Um, I already talked about the pocket knife, the last two items of this one. Now I was surprised that dollar general actually had this, but this was a two pack of, ah bandanas.
00:44:05.39
Keith
Um, I saw them and I think it was one of those, uh, impulse buys, but, uh, one is, um, safety orange. Uh, and the other one is, uh, is camouflage.
00:44:17.87
Keith
So there's always something you can do with a bandana. I mean, always something. So that was more of an impulse buy. There were two 50 a piece. It's five bucks. And i was thinking along the same lines as Jeremy. Uh, I got the cornstarch baby powder in the, uh, with the vitamin E in it.
00:44:33.60
Keith
which is for me is great for shaving. I have never tried the, the loose stuff you talked about, man.
00:44:39.01
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:44:39.52
Keith
I'll tell you what, when I'm, when I'm out there working for, you know, eight, eight hours on a tractor or something, I can barely walk.
00:44:46.12
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:44:46.60
Keith
After that, the chafing is like I'm inner legs is just so bad. It's not even funny.
00:44:52.09
Jeremy
Yeah, it sucks.
00:44:52.41
Keith
throw I throw some of that corn starch on there and it's like instant healing. So I thought I thought about a long walk home this time of year.
00:44:56.61
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:45:00.23
Keith
I'm going to be sweating. It's going to be bad. So I didn't I didn't want to mess with it.
00:45:02.69
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:45:05.39
Keith
So I was able to fit that in and I got my entire list, including taxed. at $78.26. So if you're going to bust my chops, I can take off something.
00:45:16.77
Jeremy
Nice.
00:45:20.82
Jeremy
Well, when you were when you were going along, I actually forgot. i always have a lighter in my left pocket as it is anyways.
00:45:27.38
Keith
Well, you smoke, right?
00:45:27.53
Jeremy
um Yeah, but so i I didn't even yeah, I didn't even think about that one.
00:45:29.25
Keith
Yeah. So you always have a lighter.
00:45:32.52
Jeremy
um But another another brand you can actually use, ah and and you guys can try this out as well, is Bodyglide. It almost looks like a deodorant stick. um It's a lot slicker.
00:45:42.35
Keith
Really?
00:45:43.05
Jeremy
Yeah, it's a lot slicker than you know traditional Vaseline. um you You literally use it like deodorant stick. You get it up in the pertinence, and it's pretty good.
00:45:55.53
Keith
Yeah.
00:45:55.75
Jeremy
And then Gold Bond actually makes one too.
00:45:58.79
Keith
Yes.
00:45:58.70
Jeremy
And then if you are in some running stores,
00:45:59.42
Keith
Goban does. Yeah. Oh, wait a minute. You mean Goban makes one of the ones that you're talking about like a stick?
00:46:06.01
Jeremy
yeah, yeah, they actually, it's a, it's called gold bond friction defense.
00:46:06.97
Keith
Oh.
00:46:09.82
Jeremy
Um, and if, if yeah, um, don't get the triple medicated one.
00:46:10.31
Buddy
Wow. I got to find that. Oh
00:46:11.89
Keith
Yeah, me too.
00:46:15.40
Jeremy
Um, yeah, that's, that is, that is an unfortunate burn eventually goes away, but it, uh, um, but if you, yeah.
00:46:17.05
Buddy
oh oh yeah. I've done that before.
00:46:22.13
Buddy
ah
00:46:25.47
Buddy
It'll wake you up though. If you if you're on night watch and little bit of that on your, on your family, it'll work out.
00:46:29.44
Jeremy
Yeah. If you can use a baby um ah chafing cream as well, you know, their diaper cream. But if you ever happen to be in a specialty running store, um look for a product and it's literally called butt cream, B-U-T-T cream.
00:46:46.23
Jeremy
It is, it is amazing stuff.
00:46:46.51
Keith
Are you kidding me? Oh my God.
00:46:49.81
Jeremy
It is, it works so well and you can put it anywhere that you chafe.
00:46:55.18
Keith
Nice.
00:46:55.07
Jeremy
um But it's, it's literally called butt cream. Yeah. Good stuff.
00:46:59.55
Keith
Yeah. So, um, so my list, I just figured that, you know what, uh, I can, if I can keep on walking, that was, that's going to be my most challenging part is to keep on walking. Cause it's a long walk from that, deep that dollar general back to my place.
00:47:12.30
Keith
It would take me the better part of an entire day. I would imagine. just because you it's you can't go, you know, you wouldn't want to go as the crow flies because you could probably get shot.
00:47:15.79
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:47:21.96
Keith
So you'd have to follow the roads and it's, it's very difficult. There's a whole, ah you know, ups and downs because it's, you know, mountainous. So it's a a lot of ups and downs.
00:47:28.93
Jeremy
Yeah.
00:47:30.80
Keith
So I figured there'd be a lot of breaks and there'd be, you know, time to sit and drink some stuff and eat ah eat a snack and that sort of thing. So that, that's where I went.
00:47:39.34
Jeremy
I don't think that people really, I don't think enough people, even in this lifestyle, really think about what if I had to walk home and I'm pretty damn far.
00:47:50.53
Jeremy
I just don't think enough people actually think about how painful that could be.
00:47:55.64
Keith
Yeah.
00:47:55.58
Jeremy
it because i mean i know a lot like i love to wear I love to wear sandals.
00:47:56.98
Keith
It's horrible.
00:48:00.16
Jeremy
I love to wear flip-flops. um I think it was one of my last races that I did. ah It's called the Henson Lake 24 Ultra. You go for 24 hours. However many miles you do is however many many miles you do. and I was having an issue with my feet. and i was wearing um either my Hoka's or Altra's and I was switching back and forth, but I kept getting the same hot spots.
00:48:24.21
Jeremy
All I did is I took um off my shoes and I put on some hiking sandals and I did about 15 miles in my hiking sandals. um But those are not flip-flops. Those are not like, you know, going out to the beach flip-flops.
00:48:36.39
Jeremy
These are, well you know, athletic style sandals.
00:48:36.93
Keith
Right, right.
00:48:40.30
Jeremy
But people think I'm just going to walk home in these flip-flops. Dude, you would break through those things in ah like within 10 miles.
00:48:46.11
Keith
Yeah, ah exactly.
00:48:46.89
Jeremy
Or your feet would be...
00:48:47.22
Keith
All you have to do is stub stub your toe once.
00:48:49.40
Jeremy
Yeah. Or your feet would be so chewed up, you wouldn't be able to take another step. it's it's that's I don't think enough people really put much thought to that.
00:48:58.97
Keith
if If I was wearing flip-flops, I would alter my list to grab a some duct tape, and I would actually duct tape the freaking things to my feet.
00:48:59.21
Buddy
Yeah, it's overloaded.
00:49:08.54
Jeremy
Yeah. Yeah.
00:49:09.85
Keith
Because there's no way I would make it. My my my feet would fall apart in flip-flops.
00:49:14.02
Jeremy
Oh, man. And I've got pretty hardcore feet. but still 30 miles, 35 miles is still 35 miles. Um, but and I know, i know people who can run that 35 miles in about six hours and their feet would still suck.
00:49:21.54
Keith
Yeah.
00:49:29.04
Jeremy
It would still suck for them. It doesn't matter how good a shape.
00:49:32.27
Keith
And when you say when when you you say run, do you mean run or are you just set you just using it as a fun word?
00:49:37.49
Jeremy
No, no, no. I know people who could know.
00:49:38.12
Keith
You mean walk.
00:49:39.29
Jeremy
I know people who could run that. I can, I know.
00:49:41.72
Keith
Really?
00:49:42.07
Jeremy
Yeah. Um, there was a,
00:49:43.34
Keith
In flip-flops.
00:49:44.62
Jeremy
I don't know. I wouldn't say flip-flops, but in general.
00:49:47.27
Keith
Oh, okay. Okay.
00:49:48.12
Jeremy
Now, there are people that I do know that have done sub-four-hour marathons in flip-flops, but they're they're the they they've trained their feet to them.
00:49:56.69
Keith
Wow. Wow.
00:50:00.20
Jeremy
And down in South America, and I can't remember exactly where, And I know part of Brazil, these particular people, um they run like crazy. And their sandals that they're wearing are, I mean, they're so thin and they're just basically strappy sandals.
00:50:18.83
Jeremy
And they run in these things and they run like hardcore.
00:50:20.92
Keith
Well, they live their entire life in them, right? I mean, this is what they...
00:50:23.60
Jeremy
Yes. Yeah.
00:50:24.70
Keith
Right.
00:50:25.59
Jeremy
But they're like out doing like legit hardcore mountain races in these sandals. And i saw a chick doing the all American marathon a couple of years back. And i was going across and um she had beat, like she beat my time heart, like way, way fast. And I'm walking around and I looked and I was like, that chick is wearing sandals. And I thought maybe she just changed. And then I walked up and I said, Hey,
00:50:52.01
Jeremy
I thought I saw you running in those. Were you running in those? And she's like, yeah, i just did the whole thing. And I'm i like, oh my gosh, I am the weakest human being I know.
00:51:01.22
Keith
No, no, I think, I think Americans, because, you know, I saw a video of some Indians, Indian guys working on some hot molten metal in sandals.
00:51:09.76
Jeremy
Oh
00:51:10.22
Keith
And another, another Indian guy was standing next to him. And every five seconds with, with throw a bucket of cold water on his body.
00:51:16.81
Jeremy
my gosh.
00:51:18.15
Keith
You know, we they don't have OSHA in places, you know, OSHA has made us a bunch of pussies. Yeah.
00:51:26.35
Jeremy
Oh, so. say it ain't so
00:51:29.27
Buddy
Yeah, we're soft, I'm sure.
00:51:32.02
Keith
Buddy, talk to us, man. What you got going on?
00:51:34.20
Buddy
All right. i got i think I got it.
00:51:35.57
Keith
Now that your dog issue has been solved.
00:51:37.94
Buddy
Well, it hasn't been solved, so there might be some more action. So we'll we'll see. But anyways, we'll just drive on. um So going to start out this bug out challenge.
00:51:46.61
Keith
Pull away, pull up, pull, pull away, pull away from the mic. You're busting it, man.
00:51:50.28
Buddy
Okay. I'm back in awe.
00:51:51.03
Keith
There you go.
00:51:51.60
Buddy
There we go.
00:51:51.75
Keith
There go.
00:51:52.35
Buddy
Hey, can you hear me? Shit.
00:51:56.60
Keith
Yes, we can hear you.
00:51:57.92
Buddy
Okay. I thought I, I went blank and I was like, oh no. All right. So going to an ACE hardware, um, you're going hear lawnmower now. Cause that's what we're doing outside.
00:52:09.28
Buddy
um I went to an ACE hardware. So your ACE is definitely not a dollar store. Definitely not Walmart there. You're paying a little bit more. So I didn't, my $78 didn't go as far as, as I would, would, would liked it to, and probably at another store would go a little farther, but that's what we had. So that's what we're we were going to deal with. So started out with a six by eight tarp and, uh, it's around $8,
00:52:39.65
Buddy
And it's one of the cheaper on the cheaper sizes, the thinner tarp, the blue ones. um But I got the tarp for shelter just in case, you know, 35 miles, depending on the time of day, um might need to stop overnight and rest a couple hours or something.
00:52:53.56
Buddy
Yeah. Whatever happens, you might need to to throw up a shelter. Could rain, drape it around you, whatever whatever it is. So tarp started out, that was kind of the cornerstone of a lot of it.
00:53:04.74
Buddy
Let me back up a second. So my everyday, EDC everyday, I do carry, and we'll go back to the fanny pack. So carry fanny pack with a pew pew in it and a couple extra mags and a Streamlight.
00:53:21.54
Buddy
so I do have that every day with me. It's just part of my everyday attire. Um, I also wear what, uh, a refuge medical, ah first aid kit. It's called an ankle kit around my, uh, uh, ankle.
00:53:38.09
Buddy
Cause it's an ankle kit. That's where you wear it. And so it has, you know, stop the bleed type stuff. Uh, it's got some extra, you know, stuff in there that i can need. And then I carry a TQ, a tourniquet, cat, cat seven ah with me at as well in that either in my pocket or in there. So I do carry, you know, everyday carry that. So that's part of my everyday carry. So it's going to be a man. I'm starting to blank out because these guys are right outside my window here.
00:54:10.86
Buddy
All right. So,
00:54:11.23
Keith
Take your time.
00:54:13.58
Buddy
so the So with the tarp, it was an $8 tarp. Seems like ah same probably the same tarp, Jeremy, I think you had for like, was it $4, $5, $6?
00:54:24.38
Jeremy
Probably.
00:54:24.62
Buddy
ah seem like this Everything in there seemed to be a little high to me, but I did catch a ah little break on some stuff, and I'll get to that in a minute. um Looking around, they had a space blanket, and it had so much dust on it, I was like, it was only one left.
00:54:41.50
Buddy
and uh you can see where they marked out a dollar and it's now 250 so i so now you know there we go for a space blanket for 250 but you know very versatile piece of kit that i can use it for many different things so uh next i wanted some water so i i chose for the 32 ounce bottle for a collection and a uh And for, you know, to carry, start out with, and I could refill it along the way if I found a place to refill.
00:55:12.28
Buddy
That was $3. Kind of seemed a little high, but, you know, whatever. Got some snacks for $6, and it was some jerky and a candy bar.
00:55:24.05
Buddy
It was very expensive. I could have probably bought a whole meal for $6, but we're at Ace Hardware, so that's what we deal with.
00:55:32.43
Keith
You're going to lose weight on your trip home.
00:55:34.18
Buddy
Yeah, you know, it's Jenny Craig is always a good thing every once in a while. So, and and I'm so fat. I'm so fat that, you know, I can go through three or four days without snacks and I almost tossed the snacks or something else, but we'll, you know, you get bored sometimes. And if I do stay it in overnight, I'm going to want some kind of calories.
00:55:54.41
Buddy
All right. So I found, uh, I wanted some twine and I was juggling back and forth between twine and jute. And so I found a, uh, real piece, a real cheap piece of twine, you know, it's a little spool because, you know, you can do a lot of different things with it.
00:56:11.19
Buddy
Um, especially light it on fire if you need to do a quick fire. But I thought the jute is a nine pound jute was a little bit more versatile, um, for different things. And I got, there was 30 feet of it, uh, for $2 had have been mismarked, but, uh,
00:56:29.55
Buddy
it looked like a pretty good piece of kit there. So I added that to the list. Next was duct tape for the wonders of duct tape. You can use that for, I, I've been historically using duct tape over my life, especially road marching and stuff.
00:56:46.33
Buddy
It just seemed like the, what was that? Mole skin that they used to have in the first aid kits didn't really last.
00:56:51.13
Jeremy
Yep.
00:56:52.91
Buddy
So duct tape, you know, you can, you can burn it, start a fire with it. You can put it on a boo-boo. you can put it on your shoes if they blow out, um, hotspots.
00:57:04.67
Buddy
You can just, mean, it's so versatile. It's got a million uses. We could probably do a whole podcast on just the uses of duct tape. Maybe that's a good one to do. I don't know. So, um, next was the water key. We've talked about this before.
00:57:18.33
Buddy
Um, they had the world's most expensive water keys. There was three to choose from. And, uh, 20 bucks, man.
00:57:29.22
Buddy
I was like, holy shit.
00:57:30.09
Keith
Oh my God. Are you kidding me?
00:57:32.19
Buddy
I dug around and found an $8 one that was probably, I mean, it was hidden under shit.
00:57:38.18
Keith
Wow.
00:57:38.33
Buddy
So, yes.
00:57:38.36
Jeremy
For a Silcock? Oh my goodness, dude.
00:57:42.12
Keith
They're like a, they're like a buck 50 on Amazon. I'll
00:57:44.61
Buddy
Man, these were nice, though. You know, anyways, the one i I picked was a little older.
00:57:47.53
Keith
bet.
00:57:50.13
Buddy
it looked like it had been there. And in this hardware store has been there for years. So, it was probably been there since, you know, probably as old as me, but it was still $8. So there you go.
00:58:02.67
Buddy
Still expensive. um I looked at for some cloth gloves, but you know, the type that has the the rubber on the the grip, you know, like a gripper gloves, just in case I needed to grab something, climb a fence, do something with it, you know, maybe make a fire and grab something with it that it's not, you know, cloth gloves aren't going to hold up that well, but Um, I started out with leather gloves and man, there were 20 bucks, you know, we're talking about Ace hardware here. So found some for $8, no, actually $4. So, uh, I don't know, seemed to be something I would maybe need.
00:58:41.72
Buddy
Next, I decided, uh, a lighter would be good because I need a way to make fire because I don't have a ferro rod with me or any of the other stuff. So $2 lighter, uh, would come in handy.
00:58:56.00
Buddy
Okay. So now I, as soon as I went through the store and about exhausted all my efforts and still had stuff on my list, I was like, crap. Um, what is this over here? Well, there was a bin kind of like the, the bin at a tractor supply.
00:59:12.52
Buddy
They had a bargain bin full of the really cool team who, uh, Chinese stuff there.
00:59:17.78
Jeremy
Mmm.
00:59:18.78
Buddy
Pay dirt. I threw some stuff back at the other places and, uh,
00:59:23.34
Keith
Hell yeah, exactly.
00:59:24.88
Buddy
So everything was $5. So it would have been better if it was $2, but everything was $5. So um they had the face mask you guys are talking about. I wish they would have had a two pack. It was a regular one pack, but it was oversized.
00:59:38.26
Buddy
I mean, it it kind of reminded me of the cravats of yesteryear, real thick material. You can make a do rag out of it. You can filter water with it. You can put it, you know,
00:59:50.50
Buddy
on your face if you needed to, there's just so many and things you can use for it. So, um, I'm glad I found that. i mean, my eye was immediately drawn to it. So five bucks for that. Another $5 item was a tool, a little tool bag.
01:00:05.87
Buddy
You got to carry this stuff somehow. So, uh, they didn't have any cool, you know, $5 backpacks or sling bags or anything. Everything I found was, you know, 20, $30 and stuff. So they had a little tool bag. I can throw a lot of stuff in and use my jute and make a little purse out of and rock on, you know.
01:00:25.40
Buddy
Got my fanny pack. Might as well have a purse, right?
01:00:27.80
Keith
You're definitely going have a purse you're wearing a fernie pack.
01:00:30.10
Buddy
Yep. And so got a little tool bag, put stuff in. That was five bucks. Headlamp. This is where it gets kind of expensive. But they threw in batteries. I think it was 800 lumen headlamp And after thinking, well, I already have a Streamlight. Well, headlamps are good to have because you're hands-free with it. So that was the major, the big ticket item was $20 for a damn headlamp with, ah and it had extra batteries, it had batteries in it and then a couple extra. So not real happy with that, but hey, it is what it is.
01:01:08.25
Buddy
And then ah the last thing was a $5 six of, ah six pack of 30 inch bungees from the $5 bin.
01:01:19.31
Buddy
And so if I want to put the tarp up and make some kind of lean to or some kind of a shelter or some, something with it, um I can use the bungees for a lot of different things. I'm i'm a bungee nerd. I, I love those. So that's, that's basically it. I had $4 left over. So, you know, what do I do with $4? Well, there you can't do shit with it really.
01:01:41.00
Buddy
So buy another emergency blanket, maybe.
01:01:43.78
Keith
ah They got a candy bar on their way out.
01:01:46.16
Buddy
Yeah. um So, yeah. Not, I mean, yeah didn't have a lot of items.
01:01:50.14
Jeremy
Thank you.
01:01:52.22
Buddy
ah Could have get me home. Definitely. If I had to walk home without all this stuff, I maybe want the water, you know, just, I'm, I'm a simplest
01:02:04.85
Buddy
kind of, you know, I don't like to carry a lot extra shit. And I tried to look at stuff that, you know, I would use. And, and, you know, I looked at a folding saw at one point,
01:02:16.52
Buddy
You know, do I trade the headlamp for the folding saw? You know, it's 30 miles, 35 miles, whatever it may be.
01:02:23.27
Keith
Bye.
01:02:23.85
Buddy
So, so that was my, my list. Um, I, the, the takeaway from this is try not to go to an Ace Hardware if there's a dollar store close enough.
01:02:33.52
Jeremy
a
01:02:35.09
Buddy
Does sound like the dollar store? And I've, I've actually done the dollar store before. Um, and I've done the Walmart thing before and, uh, you Walmart, so you get some great gear and it's a little more expensive, but dollars, you don't sleep on a dollar store for stuff.
01:02:50.53
