208 DGH: Females & Firearms - Empowered To Protect with Jessica Rice-Ree
Tonight, It’s another episode with The Dirty Garden Hoes. Y’all may remember back to episode 190 with Britt & Mike from Refuge Medical and how impressive they were. If you have not listened to that episode yet, I encourage you to do so. Britt & Mike were fantastic guests, and we learned so much from them.
Well, since then, Mike reached out to us and wanted to come back on the show to discuss Homeopathic Medicine, which he did… and that show will drop on Friday. You don’t want to miss that episode… it’s that good.
Brittany… on the other hand, or Britt, as she likes to be called, also reached out to us but not about The Bunker. She pitched an idea to Rhonda to add her as a Host on The Dirty Garden Hoes show. They spoke, and without hesitation, Rhonda brought her on board.
Britt brings with her a ton of knowledge and experience from Homesteading to First Aid to Shooting and Self Defense. She also has lots of valuable connections to potential guests for y’all’s benefit and enjoyment.
So, for the remainder of this year, 2025, we will drop episodes of The Dirty Garden Hoes show midweek, once each month, between our usual Friday Night Episodes.
Missy and Annett, who you already know from previous episodes and have loads of experience in preparedness and homesteading, will be on the show from time to time when they have a topic to share with y’all.
If all goes well this year for the DGHS, Rhonda and Britt will launch The Dirty Garden Hoes Show as a full Podcast, independent from The Bunker, on their own schedule next year, in 2026.
Britt makes her debut appearance tonight as a host and introduces her first guest to the show… Jessica Rice-Ree.
Jessica is a USCCA Certified Firearms Instructor who owns her own private shooting range and specializes in Womens Firearms Training.

Keith (RHONDA)
Off we go.
00:02.82
Britt
Hey guys, it's Britt and we are here with Jessica. She is actually a guest that I'm bringing on today and I'm super excited for her to share with us about who she is and what she does in the world of firearms. So Jessica, tell us a little bit about it.
00:17.62
Jessica Ree
Hey, um yeah, so my name's Jessica. um I am the firearms instructor for Empower Defense Solutions, ah focusing mainly on ah teaching women and getting women comfortable with firearms. So I'm married to my wonderful husband, Asher, and we have two little boys, Jackson Lane, and that I homeschool, so they're with me all the time. And and yeah, that's about it.
00:45.77
Keith
Welcome to the garden. um i was wondering before we dive right in if you might want to tell us a little bit about how you got started in this journey to empower women through the firearm training.
00:55.78
Jessica Ree
Yeah, so ah that's an excellent question. um So like I said, I have my two little boys all the time. So I homeschool them. They're with me Sunday through Saturday, all week long.
01:10.80
Jessica Ree
um And I, you know, I take him to the grocery store with me, um run all the errands with me. They're at home with me. And so I definitely feel, you know, responsible for their safety and my safety. And um i grew up around firearms. So my dad...
01:29.93
Jessica Ree
is ah retired law enforcement, retired military, so they weren't um foreign to me. So I always carried one with me, but I caught myself thinking one day, um if I had to pull my firearm, you know would I be confident using it?
01:48.30
Jessica Ree
and And I really had to be honest with myself and say, no, i I don't think I would be confident. And so that really kind of ah set me on a journey to start learning. My husband is amazing. He's incredibly knowledgeable and incredibly patient, but didn't maybe it was two and too smart to teach me. He couldn't quite dumb it down all the way enough for me.
02:12.94
Jessica Ree
ah So I did find some female instructors that were able to help me and really guide me as far as getting comfortable with firearms and things like that.
02:26.32
Britt
That's awesome.
02:26.69
Keith
That's awesome.
02:26.76
Britt
um So you said you were raised ah around firearms. um and So you were comfortable with them. What would you say to a woman who has never touched a firearm before and feels nervous about it?
02:38.25
Jessica Ree
ah So I think it's human nature to fear what we don't understand. So a lot of us just haven't had the exposure, um haven't been around them. So when we don't know about them, it's a lot easier two ah be scared. And I think that's a totally normal response. Nobody should feel bad for feeling that way.
02:59.38
Jessica Ree
ah You're not dumb or or stupid for feeling that way either. Yeah. I think you know simply seeking out education to learn how firearms function and how to handle them safely is a huge step towards alleviating that fear.
03:15.45
Jessica Ree
ah a lot of our fears as women, they come from worrying about having accidental discharges and or harming ourselves or someone innocent around us. So Once we you know can seek out getting educated and things like that and understanding the firearm and how it functions, a lot of those fears typically go away.
03:37.49
Britt
it turns into more of like a healthy fear. You know, it's kind of like a you respect it a lot more.
03:41.18
Jessica Ree
oh
03:43.61
Jessica Ree
Right. It's like water. you know you You learn how to swim and you're more comfortable, but you still have that healthy fear of ah being safe.
03:51.76
Britt
Yep. I remember my first.
03:52.23
Keith
So Jessica, you grew up, sorry, go ahead.
03:55.15
Britt
yeah You're good. No, you're fine.
03:58.65
Keith
Oh, I was just going to ask, you said you grew up around the firearms and Britt, didn't you say that too on a previous talk?
04:04.64
Britt
I did not. um I actually, yeah i yeah, I was the exact opposite.
04:06.42
Keith
You did not. You're the opposite. Okay.
04:09.59
Britt
I did not touch a firearm until five years ago when I got married um to my husband who was in the military.
04:15.42
Keith
Okay. That's right. Okay.
04:17.25
Britt
And I remember the first time I was on a, ra he took me to the range and, you know, he was explaining it to me and, everything, I pulled the trigger that first time and just started bawling my eyes out um because it was one of those like it was a fear, but it also was the the sound and, the you know, the recoil and just kind of the exposure of everything that my walls just, you know, I broke for a minute.
04:30.68
Keith
That's right.
04:41.05
Britt
And then he felt bad because he made me cry. And um I had to go to the range with somebody else for a little bit that wasn't him because I was just way more open and emotional. I think with him. i don't know if that's, you know, I've heard that is common.
04:54.98
Britt
Um, sometimes doing it with your husband in the beginning.
04:58.24
Jessica Ree
Yeah, super common.
04:58.37
Keith
I don't know how I forgot that story. So and we have someone from every different situation. I think you grew up with firearms. Britt grew up without firearms.
05:09.32
Keith
I grew up with firearms in my household, but it was all the boys and the girls. You know, we were told stay in the kitchen, basically.
05:15.99
Jessica Ree
Right.
05:16.82
Keith
So little bit of everything. Okay, carry on.
05:23.17
Jessica Ree
i like I do like to point out that, you know, even, and I hope that it makes people feel better because even though I grew up in a house with firearms and they weren't foreign to me and they weren't taught, you know, I was taught to be safe around them, but they weren't taught to me as being, and you know, a ah bad thing that I even still had fears and apprehensions, you know, towards firearms.
05:23.24
Britt
ah
05:42.27
Keith
Thank you.
05:51.22
Jessica Ree
So I think it's totally normal.
05:55.21
Britt
Yeah, I definitely think it's something that um it's kind of like riding a bike too, that just because you own it and you have been to the range, you definitely have to stay up to date on your training and range time because it definitely can be you know, lost or forgotten skill.
06:09.71
Britt
um And, you know, one little one little mistake or missing one step, you know, can turn a situation dangerous.
06:18.76
Britt
So...
06:18.81
Jessica Ree
one hundred percent
06:20.54
Britt
Yep. So we're working with women, because ah you have classes, you know, several weekends, um I have seen, what is a common fear um or intimidation that women have around firearms that you've seen?
06:37.52
Jessica Ree
Um, gosh, that's a good one. and I think women as a whole are fearful of them.
06:41.40
Britt
You're okay.
06:43.96
Jessica Ree
Well, not even fearful. They're, they feel like they don't belong. Um, I think that the firearms industry is ah looked upon as, um, being a male dominant industry.
06:58.46
Jessica Ree
Um, and that firearms maybe just aren't for us. You know, they don't, they don't belong for us or or, belong to us.
07:02.39
Keith
Mm-hmm.
07:05.84
Jessica Ree
Um, and I think that that's because, you know, the firearms industry was definitely marketed towards men in the beginning. ah but I think it's starting to change. There's been some polls that have come out recently, ah that have reported an increase in gun ownership among women. And I think the industry is starting to, to pick up on that and,
07:28.18
Jessica Ree
And start, you know, marketing towards women and creating items for women and and making them feel more involved. So I definitely think that helps.
07:38.40
Jessica Ree
I hope I answered that one well.
07:38.43
Britt
I definitely think, yep, you're great.
07:40.38
Keith
That is good answer.
07:41.38
Britt
I definitely think, um you know, mama bear instinct. Women have children, like you said, and we're out in this world alone. You know, I'm out with my four kids often by myself. And it's you, the only person that you can trust to protect yourself is yourself.
07:58.17
Britt
So just like you were saying, even though you have a firearm, you know, were you proficient in it? And some people who don't carry firearms, you know, how are you going to protect yourself? And I definitely think one of those things is like use the tools that you have and that you're comfortable with.
08:12.41
Britt
And if you don't have any, then, you know, learn and get comfortable with something.
08:17.97
Jessica Ree
Right.
08:18.02
Britt
Because I know you were you were talking you were doing a um like mixed martial arts self-defense class, weren't you recently, too?
08:26.32
Jessica Ree
Yeah, yeah, we did. n
08:30.78
Jessica Ree
Let's see.
08:30.97
Keith
what was What was that like?
08:31.82
Britt
I think it's cool mixing those two worlds together, you know?
08:36.07
Jessica Ree
Yeah, so in in my class, um so I teach a basic class. I teach it as if, um you know, you have I teach it as if you've never even touched or seen a firearm. I mean, I start from the basics, you know, all the way up to getting you onto the range.
08:55.70
Jessica Ree
um But I also make a point to Explain that what I'm teaching, you know as far as your grip and your stance ah Your side alignment is very likely going to change if you find yourself in a self-defense situation so While I teach you how to stand and how to grip in a controlled environment on the range and that may not be what you do if someone is Suddenly on top of you, you know attacking you
09:27.66
Jessica Ree
so
09:31.47
Jessica Ree
I'm trying to think of what I was going to say.
09:33.28
Britt
You're okay.
09:33.72
Jessica Ree
He can air but he can edit that part out.
09:35.23
Britt
Yep.
09:35.72
Jessica Ree
um so
09:36.15
Keith
so
09:38.69
Jessica Ree
that being said, think it's really important to find
09:47.10
Jessica Ree
an instructor that is experienced in hand-to-hand combat because just a second.
09:58.76
Britt
It's such a different world when it's up close and personal like that.
10:00.59
Keith
you
10:03.13
Keith
Well, if they get close enough to you to touch you,
10:03.54
Britt
too.
10:07.28
Keith
your firearm becomes secondary.
10:07.63
Britt
I was just, yeah, I just saw a um ah statistic that was saying the most dangerous place that we are is actually in parking lots and how close, you know, somebody can be next to you and you would, you would know it before they're on top of you.
10:10.58
Jessica Ree
ah
10:21.95
Keith
and Totally.
10:24.41
Jessica Ree
Right. So, um, so I've had the opportunity to train with a local instructor, um, and I'm in Arkansas. And he trains all the law enforcement um in hand-to-hand combat and things like that because realistically, you know, in real life, what you're going to see is you're you're very likely not going to be able to get in your stance and pull a firearm, you know, from 30 feet away and shout commands at someone. You know, it's very likely that they're going to either already be on top of you, already be grabbing you.
11:01.13
Jessica Ree
ah So it's really important. you know, to be able to create that distance to pull your firearm and things like that, and just being exposed to those situations is really eye-opening.
11:14.74
Jessica Ree
ah Like I said, we've gotten to train with um an instructor in Fort Smith. um His name's Coach Don Paul Bells, and i could sit here and talk about all of his certifications, but I've there it's very likely I could not do him any justice. um Very, very informative. He's trained for very many years and is very um passionate about, you know, teaching people how to defend themselves and just real life scenarios.
11:48.07
Jessica Ree
and And I just think exposure to those scenarios is incredibly important.
11:54.10
Keith
So does that mean you've taken some tactical training?
11:54.29
Britt
Yeah.
11:58.54
Jessica Ree
I guess you could call it tactical training.
12:00.71
Keith
Like scenarios of like defensive scenarios?
12:02.04
Jessica Ree
yeah
12:03.65
Keith
Yeah.
12:04.48
Jessica Ree
Right. So, um, one of the things we did recently, um, it's really common to be attacked by someone with a knife. I mean, you know, people always think as firearms being the only thing that can hurt people.
12:20.74
Jessica Ree
And that's not true. You know, someone with a knife is just as, if not more deadly, um than a firearm. And it was really, really eye-opening ah how difficult it is to fend off somebody with a knife. You know, even if I have my firearm on me, now I'm having to, I can't just pull my firearm and start discharging because by then they've probably already stabbed me a couple of times.
12:50.87
Jessica Ree
So first I have to know how to fend off that knife, ah create distance in order to pull my firearm.
13:01.98
Keith
That sounds like some awesome training.
13:04.97
Jessica Ree
It's fun.
13:05.27
Keith
I'd love to take that training.
13:05.84
Jessica Ree
was a lot of fun. Yeah.
13:08.18
Britt
Scenario-based training is definitely important because you never know how you're going to react in that stressful situation until you're in it. And when you're in it, the last thing you want to think about is how do I, what do I do now?
13:15.81
Keith
Right.
13:16.18
Jessica Ree
yeah
13:18.91
Britt
You know?
13:21.55
Jessica Ree
Stress, yeah, stress or scenario-based training is what I was trying to think about, um in and stress inoculation is huge.
13:31.76
Britt
Yep. Yeah. Your body does some crazy things when you're under stress. You know, you have
13:37.01
Keith
Well, I know that when I'm going outside and my rooster is outside, I think I'm going to be like a ninja and fight my rooster.
13:42.69
Jessica Ree
yeah
13:45.59
Keith
And that's not usually how it works out. So real life is different.
13:47.30
Jessica Ree
ah Right, we start running from him.
13:49.55
Britt
ah
13:50.13
Keith
What I see in my head is never the same as what really happens.
13:50.66
Jessica Ree
I have that problem too.
13:54.62
Jessica Ree
That's funny.
13:54.63
Britt
That is definitely true, especially with um homesteading life.
14:00.13
Jessica Ree
Yes.
14:00.39
Britt
They just have a mind of their own.
14:01.66
Jessica Ree
That's good practice with a rooster. It serves as some good stress inoculation.
14:05.83
Keith
Maybe I should practice my firearm on him.
14:06.20
Britt
My husband... Oh my gosh. That just spurred a memory of mine.
14:11.10
Keith
So jet.
14:11.62
Britt
On my first date with my husband, he shot a rooster in front of me.
14:14.83
Keith
He said spurred.
14:15.56
Britt
Nope.
14:16.06
Keith
Sorry.
14:16.83
Jessica Ree
oh no!
14:17.34
Keith
No, on your first date.
14:17.88
Britt
Yeah. On our first date, the ro the rooster was like... and So... We have a crazy story, but I'm going to keep it short and sweet. We were out just talking in his Jeep that had no doors and windows out at our friend's house. And we were just chit-chatting in the car till like three or four o'clock in the morning.
14:32.95
Britt
um One of the first few times that we started talking. And the rooster was just crowing and crowing. And it was like two o'clock in the morning. And he was just going off like crazy. and And I guess they had been, the rooster had been annoying them.
14:47.65
Britt
for a while now, but I guess they had talked about shooting it. So he just went inside and grabbed the.22 and looked at it, made sure it was the rooster that was crowing at 2 a.m. and just took it right out.
14:57.78
Britt
And I was like, oh, okay, that's interesting.
14:59.67
Keith
Oh, wow.
15:00.84
Britt
it was homestead life.
15:01.69
Keith
So right then, you knew he takes care of business.
15:04.78
Britt
Yep, I was like, okay, he can, you know, keep keep me and my kids safe for sure.
15:11.02
Keith
So Jessica, do you teach?
15:11.00
Britt
um back to Back on topic.
15:14.03
Keith
Yeah, Jessica, i was wondering if you teach a specific kind of firearm, like handgun. Do you also teach any ah like like the 22 rifles or anything else?
15:25.69
Jessica Ree
um Right now, i don't teach any long gun classes. um So what I teach is, you know, handgun handling. So basic pistol.
15:37.41
Jessica Ree
um But I do have, I have a 22 pistol that I teach on
15:45.84
Britt
I'm sure the recoil on that for newbies is probably nice to get them started with.
15:51.10
Jessica Ree
Right.
15:51.16
Keith
I think so.
15:51.35
Britt
You have a...
15:51.50
Jessica Ree
So, you know, my ladies that come. Sorry, go ahead.
15:55.39
Britt
No, you're good. Keep going.
15:57.90
Jessica Ree
ah So, yeah, my ladies that come that are, you know, and super nervous and and, you know, have never shot a firearm or they're, you know, shaking like crazy, which is incredibly normal.
16:13.14
Jessica Ree
You know, I shook the first couple of times I shot a firearm. That's not out of the ordinary or abnormal. ah But I keep a little.22 pistol, you know, just to get just to get, you know, everybody comfortable and.
16:27.58
Jessica Ree
to get that first mag out of the way is what always tell them.
16:30.47
Keith
I think that's awesome because I think that was the most terrifying part, not knowing, you know, how bad it was going to kick and how loud it was going to be.
16:31.02
Britt
It's always the first mag.
16:32.85
Jessica Ree
Yeah, and then they're ready.
16:40.14
Jessica Ree
Right.
16:40.39
Britt
Yeah, it definitely can catch people off guard. Do you have a recommendation of like a first timers gun for women that you recommend?
16:50.10
Jessica Ree
first-timer's gun. let me
16:56.15
Jessica Ree
let me go
17:00.53
Jessica Ree
um Not necessarily a first-timers gun. I think that once women, you know, go to that basic class and they learn how to m hold the firearm and how to absorb that recoil, and they can really shoot any gun, you know, that they feel comfortable with. There isn't necessarily, you know, sure might have less recoil, but I wouldn't recommend it for self-defense. So so i um
17:34.48
Jessica Ree
As far as calibers and things like go, like I will always recommend 380 or a 9mm. and a lot of women will come with the misconception that, well, they can handle a 380, but they can't handle a 9mm. And like I said earlier, you know, I explained to them that once they're taught how to grip the firearm properly and how to absorb that recoil, that they'll be able to handle handle either caliber just fine.
17:59.56
Jessica Ree
m and that in terms of stopping power, you know, both calibers can be effective. So either i just, yeah, I just recommend a.380 or a 9mm.
18:07.11
Britt
Yeah, that makes sense.
18:14.21
Jessica Ree
Anything larger might be excessive. I don't think anything's excessive, but they may not feel comfortable carrying it, but I don't recommend not for self-defense.
18:19.60
Britt
Yeah.
18:23.57
Jessica Ree
Okay.
18:24.63
Britt
Yeah, 22 is more for animals than, you know, self-defense.
18:24.70
Jessica Ree
not for self-defense
18:30.14
Jessica Ree
ah Right. Of course, if I would recommend ah you know a 22 over nothing, I'm never going to judge anyone for having a 22.
18:31.19
Keith
That's a good way to look at it.
18:35.70
Britt
That's true.
18:37.04
Jessica Ree
It's better than not having anything. so
18:40.35
Britt
Very true. So when, um, in terms of firearms, somebody who's just looking to find one, um, what would you recommend? Like in terms of grip, comfort, practicality, i I know I went to just like our local like gun store and was able just like feel them.
19:01.40
Britt
Um, what do what do you normally tell people, tell women in that situation?
19:07.07
Jessica Ree
ah So I always talk about firearms um as if they're vehicles. So you're going to choose a firearm that is best suits your lifestyle in whatever, you know, stage of life that you're in.
19:20.08
Jessica Ree
they're so theyre They're like vehicles in in the sense that they're going have different manufacturers and models and they're all going to have different features. So, you know, depending on the stage of life that you're in, you may have, um, you may have children or you may be learning how to carry on your body.
19:42.62
Jessica Ree
and so you might prefer something, you know, with an external thumb safety to give you a little more peace of mind. um, But other than that, I mean, like you said, just going and picking them up at the gun store, gripping them, you know, feeling how they feel in your hands. and I also explained that a good quality firearm is not going to be the cheapest firearm that the store has.
20:10.61
Jessica Ree
ah They're definitely an investment. But that being said, i would rather you carry the cheapest firearm on the market than no firearm at all. So ah you don't have to go out and buy the most expensive firearm in order to protect yourself.
20:27.13
Britt
Yeah, try to fit with your budget.
20:27.60
Jessica Ree
I just, whatever, right, just whatever you're going to be comfortable carrying and using.
20:27.62
Keith
I have a.
20:29.04
Britt
Better to have something than nothing.
20:34.83
Jessica Ree
and Get something, yeah, absolutely.
20:34.95
Keith
Could I ask a question? Go ahead, get something.
20:37.55
Jessica Ree
Yeah.
20:38.36
Keith
Go ahead.
20:39.26
Jessica Ree
Oh, no, no, no. I just, you know, tell them to get something that's compact enough that you're going to feel comfortable carrying it. um You know, just something that you will carry. That is what matters. Something that you are going
20:57.52
Keith
Uh-oh.
20:58.48
Britt
Did we lose her? No.
21:01.18
Keith
Uh-oh. Her dot turned pink and then orange.
21:04.33
Britt
Oh, coming back.
21:04.67
Jessica Ree
oh Are you there?
21:05.31
Keith
Oh, there she is.
21:06.33
Jessica Ree
i had a phone call.
21:06.48
Keith
hi
21:06.51
Britt
You're back.
21:07.57
Jessica Ree
I'm sorry.
21:08.42
Keith
oh that's okay.
21:08.51
Britt
You're okay.
21:09.34
Keith
oh
21:09.45
Jessica Ree
i mean, I have it on do not disturb, but I guess.
21:12.91
Keith
So where I talked over you is going to get cut out and you started over. That was perfect. He'll use the part where started over.
21:21.53
Jessica Ree
Okay.
21:21.53
Keith
And I'm sorry I keep talking over you.
21:23.48
Jessica Ree
No, no, please don't apologize. i feel like I'm not doing a good job at this. so
21:27.50
Keith
Oh, you're doing a great job.
21:28.78
Britt
You're doing great.
21:31.20
Keith
I'm scared to go back and listen to the first time I was on a podcast. It would probably ruin me.
21:34.83
Jessica Ree
Yeah.
21:37.73
Keith
But I do have a question. i was wondering, um it's it's there's so much to learn anyway, but when after you start learning...
21:39.29
Jessica Ree
Yeah.
21:46.93
Keith
As a woman, men men have it so easy. They just get a holster and stick their gun in it. But as a woman, do we put it in our purse? Do we get a belly band or ah inside holster or inside waistband?
21:58.03
Jessica Ree
yeah
22:00.80
Keith
Or what what do you do and what do you think other women should think about when they're picking picking something?
22:07.53
Jessica Ree
That is an excellent question. And that even goes back to, um I think the industry is really starting to build things and cater, you know, towards women so that we can carry.
22:19.52
Jessica Ree
um i think when we first start carrying, you know, you think of the men, they have their blue jeans on and they've got their leather belt with their in the waistband holster all set up and That's just not how, that's not how I want to carry. That's not, I don't wear jeans every day with a leather belt to slab a holster on.
22:38.85
Jessica Ree
um I wear leggings and t-shirts. um I do wear jeans sometimes, but. And for me, i want to also, i want to be able to carry in whatever I'm wearing. So for me personally, i started with a belly band um there and i and I do recommend them for first time um on body carriers.
23:04.41
Jessica Ree
um I then moved from the belly band to something called a comfort concealment band.
23:12.06
Britt
Thank you.
23:12.14
Jessica Ree
It's actually a thin band that Velcros around you. So I can Velcro that band around me, slide my Kydex holster with my firearm, you know, onto that band, and then maybe pull my leggings up over it and carry that way. And then, you know, I have a little baggy T-shirt on that helps conceal ah So there's there's a lot more options coming out for women, which I think is great.
23:37.24
Jessica Ree
and
23:37.31
Keith
I'm going to have to look that up.
23:37.93
Jessica Ree
what I ah usually don't have strong opinions, but I do have a strong opinion on purse carry. I don't recommend it, and I won't recommend it.
23:50.44
Jessica Ree
um And that just simply comes from learning how quickly attacks can happen and and how quickly... or I guess how not quickly you can pull it from your purse. You know, it's going to take time.
24:05.72
Jessica Ree
ah so I do recommend, you know, strapping it on body carry is what I recommend. The only other option that I will talk about is the crossbody bags.
24:17.87
Jessica Ree
They look like fanny packs that strap, you know over your shoulder and around your ribs. ah So they can't very easily be taken off of you, but they also... um have a quick pull tab so you can access your firearm quickly. so So that would be my second choice as far as if on-body carry was not an option for me because simply it could not be taken off taken off of me. You know, my purse could be stolen from me, and it's it's really unlikely that that crossbody can be taken off me.
24:52.12
Jessica Ree
um And they have a kydex that is Velcroed to the inside by itself, so it's not floating around with pens or your lipstick or your lip gloss or your keys.
25:04.35
Jessica Ree
um And it has that quick pull tab so you can, you know, for a quick draw. And it's something you can practice with.
25:11.15
Britt
Yeah, I was going to say one thing I've heard about those as I've not haven't tried to them, but you have to really practice your dry firing and your, um, deployment.
25:22.09
Britt
I don't know what word I'm looking for there, but you know, like actually pulling it out of your bag and how fast can you, can you get like that?
25:24.51
Jessica Ree
All right, you're doing
25:28.44
Britt
Cause like you were saying, seconds matter sometimes. Um, if we're pulling the firearm, it is, it's, we're not in a good situation. We've already crossed the line of where we want to be. Um, so it's definitely something that you have to train with just like we were talking about earlier with scenarios and stress.
25:44.54
Britt
Um, and it has to be the specific cross body body with that quick pull tab. That definitely is what makes a huge difference. I think.
25:51.93
Jessica Ree
ah Right. i agree.
25:54.60
Britt
Yeah.
25:55.22
Keith
um you know I'm gonna look for that. ah have a belly.
25:57.73
Jessica Ree
It's awesome.
25:57.86
Britt
Yeah.
25:59.50
Jessica Ree
I can drop some brands.
25:59.52
Britt
They're starting to get more popular.
25:59.80
Keith
Go
26:01.17
Jessica Ree
I really think they should sponsor me because I'm constantly, I'm always sending women, you know, I'm like, I don't get anything from this.
26:04.02
Keith
ahead. Maybe me with you.
26:08.53
Jessica Ree
I just genuinely, um i genuinely use their product and recommend it So I'm happy to do that.
26:08.85
Keith
You know what?
26:15.10
Keith
You should look on their website and see if they have affiliate links. Maybe maybe you can become an affiliate.
26:18.26
Jessica Ree
Right? I should do that. but
26:20.35
Britt
At least have an affiliate code.
26:20.92
Jessica Ree
But I'm i'm happy. Yeah.
26:23.38
Keith
Well, I have a
26:23.43
Jessica Ree
But I'm happy to, they work for me, so I'm happy to recommend them regardless.
26:29.94
Keith
I want to say something about the belly band, and I've said it before on Tops Bunker. I have one, and I love it, except for when i need to go to the bathroom.
26:41.78
Jessica Ree
Yes.
26:42.06
Keith
If I'm out in public, it's so hard to go to the bathroom because you have to take the gun out, and it's just a big hassle.
26:42.95
Jessica Ree
Yes.
26:47.38
Jessica Ree
Oh, they're hot.
26:48.43
Keith
So I like the idea of the Kydex bag.
26:51.83
Jessica Ree
So I've seen some of the belly bands, um and I will only if someone wants a belly band and they're dead set on it, the only one I will recommend is the Comfort Tac brand.
27:03.21
Jessica Ree
um And that's because i have seen some that don't have any covering over the trigger guard, and you know, that's an issue. So if you have that nylon and that soft material ah belly band, you know, there's the potential for that, something to poke into that trigger guard and you know, cause an accidental discharge.
27:23.30
Jessica Ree
So I can confidently say that that comfort tack band does have a really hard a leather over the trigger guard. so
27:33.15
Keith
Okay, maybe I'll get one of those and try it out.
27:34.89
Britt
on On that note, Jessica, I'm curious what your opinion is um for carrying, you know, chambered when it's on the body or not.
27:45.62
Jessica Ree
Right. So I do personally carry one in the chamber ah that's come with practice and knowing how to safely use it
27:46.32
Keith
Hmm.
28:00.43
Jessica Ree
At the end of the day, i let me back up. I have seen people put other people down for not carrying chambered, and I also don't think that's okay.
28:11.34
Jessica Ree
um I think at the end of the day, it should always be a personal choice. I think you are the only person that knows what you are comfortable with. um I think having a firearm, you know, carrying carrying a firearm without one in the chamber is better than carrying no firearm at all.
28:30.29
Britt
Yep.
28:30.68
Jessica Ree
um But if you can train and you learn those good habits and you have good trigger discipline and you're, you know, you're carrying on body in a preferably a Kydex holster that is molded to your firearm um and you're comfortable carrying one in the chamber, then I think, you know, i think you should. But ultimately, it's it's a personal decision.
28:54.78
Britt
Yeah, it definitely comes down to confidence and training. um It's not something I would recommend for beginners.
29:00.45
Jessica Ree
and ah And it's also, right, and in the lifestyle-specific thing.
29:01.25
Britt
Yeah.
29:06.95
Jessica Ree
So if you have small children, you may not be comfortable carrying one in the chamber. um If you have a child with disabilities, which is um ah very common ah thing we have, um you may not feel comfortable carrying one in the chamber. And I think that's perfectly fine.
29:25.19
Jessica Ree
And I don't think people should be putting other people down for it either.
29:28.72
Britt
Yeah, no, definitely. we all are We all should be supporting each other in this because it all comes down to comfort level, like you said.
29:33.64
Keith
Mm-hmm.
29:35.72
Britt
I know I don't personally carry one in the chamber because I have small children, just like you said, but I also have learned and dry fired enough to know that I don't carry one in the chamber so that, you know, the first thing I'm doing is racking my slide as soon as i grab my firearm.
29:36.78
Jessica Ree
Right.
29:40.80
Jessica Ree
Right.
29:50.43
Jessica Ree
Right. 100%. 100%.
29:50.86
Britt
So it's all about how you train. And that's why I think dry firing and range time is so, so, so important.
29:57.95
Jessica Ree
one hundred percent
29:59.25
Keith
i agree that's one of the things i practice too is how fast can i rack the chamber
30:04.96
Britt
Yep. Ever since I got the red dot on the top of mine, it's made it so much easier because I can just like put my hand flat.
30:11.88
Jessica Ree
Oh yeah, just palm it.
30:12.27
Keith
oh yeah
30:13.53
Britt
Yep. And just get it over with. um
30:16.73
Jessica Ree
Yeah.
30:16.84
Britt
But while we're talking about training, what's the biggest mistake that you've seen people um make after buying a firearm or, you know, range stuff?
30:26.67
Jessica Ree
Yeah. The biggest mistake I have seen is people go buy a firearm um and then they go home and leave it in the case and put it on top of their closet.
30:37.61
Britt
um
30:38.97
Jessica Ree
ah So just, you know, simply not training at all. um The other mistake that I see is women will go buy one or their husbands will go buy one for them and they'll go home and ah husband, fiance, brother, whoever will load it for them, you know, chamber it, holster it and stick it in their purse for them.
31:00.65
Britt
ah
31:00.75
Jessica Ree
And all of a sudden, you know, they feel safe. And so i think the biggest mistake that you can make is just is not learning how to use it, you know, and not hitting the range.
31:12.11
Britt
um Not training. It's just, it's the same thing with anything we do in life. You know, be when you're driving, you have to learn how to drive. You're not just instantly the best driver on the roads when you get your first vehicle.
31:24.36
Britt
And like you were talking about earlier, you know, a gun is a vehicle.
31:24.49
Jessica Ree
Right.
31:27.19
Britt
It's a tool that we have in our, in our life if we choose to, but you know, we definitely need to train with it.
31:34.31
Jessica Ree
Right.
31:39.93
Britt
Hmm.
31:40.02
Keith
Well,
31:41.64
Britt
You got anything, Rhonda?
31:43.45
Keith
I can ah speak to something. My cousin, um there was a period of my life where I was single living with my cousin. ah This was in my 40s. I think I mentioned earlier that I didn't use a gun growing up. I was never taught how to use a gun. I was in my 40s when I first
32:01.54
Jessica Ree
you
32:02.02
Keith
actually took the steps. And it is because I was intimidated. i had lots of opportunities before, but I was just intimidated. You know, going to look, I'm not going to do well. I'm going to look silly, you know, whatever.
32:14.69
Keith
But my cousin and I supported each other and we shopped for guns. And then we ah found the local, um you know, one of the firing ranges that were offering the certification for the concealed carry in Texas. And And we went and did it together and that helps so much.
32:32.59
Jessica Ree
Yes.
32:32.83
Keith
and So if you have a buddy, I think that's, I think that's a big help to help you get over that first step of actually going and shooting that thing.
32:41.82
Jessica Ree
I agree.
32:42.07
Britt
I think anything is more fun with a buddy.
32:45.61
Keith
That's true.
32:45.90
Britt
No.
32:45.97
Jessica Ree
Yeah, we have a blast. um We have so much fun.
32:52.30
Britt
I can't imagine just like, you know, a day at the range with a bunch of ladies that I need to make it out there. I know I've talked about making it out there.
32:58.68
Jessica Ree
a
32:59.16
Britt
I just need to come out there.
33:01.20
Jessica Ree
That's okay.
33:01.19
Britt
um One of these days.
33:02.39
Jessica Ree
You got kiddos and you're busy.
33:02.42
Keith
you know
33:05.21
Britt
and It definitely sounds like a blast though. What other kinds of um training do you normally recommend beyond just the safety course? I know we talked about the self-defense. Is there anything else in the space that you recommend?
33:19.50
Jessica Ree
You know, ah something I think that I should talk about, ah and it's not necessarily training, but I feel like as law-abiding citizens, ah one of the things that prevents us from ah caring is not understanding or not knowing the laws in whatever state that you're in.
33:41.72
Jessica Ree
So I know You know, we we really want to do the right thing. we want to make sure we're abiding the laws. um And that's that's huge for us, especially as moms.
33:54.29
Britt
Oh yeah, and they do vary state to state, so make sure you know.
33:54.55
Jessica Ree
But, um you know, we don't we don't have time to go to jail for, you know, we got to be home to do laundry and cook dinner.
33:59.95
Britt
ah Yeah,
34:01.51
Keith
Thank you.
34:02.38
Jessica Ree
Exactly.
34:03.33
Britt
the house will fall apart in a few days.
34:03.50
Jessica Ree
But when first... exactly but when i first
34:07.23
Britt
Even though, going to say, even though the peace and quiet, you know, for like 24 hours, if I could just nap, even though maybe a gel cell wouldn't be very comfortable.
34:14.51
Jessica Ree
Yeah, it might be a small break.
34:17.33
Britt
Yeah.
34:18.77
Jessica Ree
It might still be a quiet break.
34:20.58
Britt
Yeah.
34:21.62
Jessica Ree
ah So one of the big things, like I said, I'm in Arkansas. um And when I first started, you know, caring, I really wanted to learn the laws. And um I was directed to ah nonprofit organization in Arkansas ah that I really, really highly recommend.
34:40.56
Jessica Ree
um And that's that's Gun Owners of Arkansas. They are a nonprofit organization. And they were somewhere that I could go. And i was confident in the information I was receiving.
34:55.38
Jessica Ree
You know, there was no vested interest in and the information I was receiving. And if I had questions, you know, they were able to give me statutes to back it up so that I could read it myself.
35:09.29
Jessica Ree
and And that's just really hard to find because when you start asking about laws, you know, you get conflicting information from so many people. And, you know, if you ask them...
35:22.35
Jessica Ree
and you know, where where does this come from or how do you know that? They'll tell you, well, I just know my my brother's a state trooper and he told me. And and that's fine.
35:34.91
Jessica Ree
But if you can find someone or an organization that can back up what they're saying with with statutes and and things like that, um I think that's really important. So and it's but it just helps with confidence, you know, being confident and You know, I can walk in this place and know that I'm caring lawfully and things like that.
35:57.42
Britt
And look up, one thing I would say is look up, you know, if you travel into other states.
35:57.66
Keith
That's an excellent point.
36:02.50
Britt
We're so close to the Oklahoma-Arkansas border that, you know, they're different, then they vary.
36:02.80
Jessica Ree
Right.
36:08.08
Britt
So definitely know where you're going and the laws there is a big thing.
36:13.03
Jessica Ree
Right.
36:14.95
Keith
I think there's a website where you can ah find out which states reciprocate. If you get a concealed carry, and like in Texas, it reciprocated into ah Kansas when we were living there.
36:27.01
Jessica Ree
Right. And, you know, um a lot of states are permitless carry at this point.
36:27.83
Keith
So,
36:32.19
Keith
yes, that's true.
36:32.62
Jessica Ree
So we hope to see that trend and continue.
36:37.14
Britt
Definitely. Do you normally recommend people get their concealed carry or is that another like kind of up to them?
36:44.13
Jessica Ree
um Do i recommend it? In Arkansas, um I recommend it if they meet a very specific ah criteria for an needing one.
36:57.80
Jessica Ree
um But Arkansas is permitless carry, so.
37:03.86
Britt
Yeah. And what about, um,
37:04.82
Jessica Ree
you're probably You'll probably have to take that question off there.
37:08.00
Britt
You're fine. We can take that one off. um Do you have any...
37:10.98
Jessica Ree
lot of people won't like me for that one. Okay, go ahead.
37:12.98
Britt
yeah You're fine. Do you have any thoughts on um insurance? Like carriers insurance or whatever it's called?
37:20.22
Jessica Ree
No, I can't talk on insurance either.
37:20.29
Keith
Yeah.
37:22.41
Britt
Okay, that's fine.
37:23.52
Jessica Ree
Sorry, sorry.
37:23.52
Britt
He can totally cut this out. No, you're fine.
37:25.31
Jessica Ree
and
37:25.49
Britt
I'm just... I'm always curious because I i never had it, but you know, USCCA and all those other ones, so...
37:28.51
Jessica Ree
no
37:31.25
Jessica Ree
Yeah. Now, do it do I recommend? Yeah, sure, but I just can't. I'm not allowed to talk about it.
37:37.72
Britt
Well, it's definitely something that it's up to their discretion on those things.
37:42.23
Jessica Ree
ah Right.
37:42.87
Britt
You know, so we can cut all that out.
37:46.07
Keith
yeah
37:46.19
Jessica Ree
Thank you.
37:46.54
Britt
a
37:47.06
Jessica Ree
sorry
37:48.45
Britt
You're fine.
37:49.81
Keith
um I have another question about your training and your thoughts on the training.
37:52.08
Jessica Ree
yeah
37:54.15
Keith
So I have a friend that like she has anxiety really bad and I also know other people that have PTSD, but the noise in a gun range of the other people shooting around you um can be very loud.
38:07.57
Keith
And this particular person like jumps every time someone shoots and it's just, it interferes with her learning.
38:14.39
Jessica Ree
right
38:14.52
Keith
um Have you taught people like that? And also what do you think about outdoor ranges?
38:19.86
Jessica Ree
Oh, absolutely. And that's an excellent question. So, and and honestly, you know, indoor ranges, it's just a fact that they're going to louder, you know, that percussion is going to be so much louder, that sound doesn't have anywhere to go.
38:35.13
Jessica Ree
ah So for someone like that, I would definitely recommend an outdoor range. ah My range is outdoor. i don't even prefer indoor ranges. um And then also not having people, you know, shoot next to you. So, you know, my range is on my property.
38:52.67
Jessica Ree
and When I have my students out, they shoot one at a time. i don't have people lined up ah shooting next to each other. but also, um you know, if you go to another range, you don't know who's beside you.
39:09.97
Jessica Ree
and what level of their training, if any, you know, that they have. So that is why i teach on my private range um is is for my students and mine safety also.
39:23.86
Jessica Ree
But as far as, you know, I do have women who are jump, they'll jump or, um you know, and I'm right there with them. They'll close their eyes and it'll take them a little bit.
39:37.84
Jessica Ree
And just, I, simply would say that exposure is going to be the best benefit for them.
39:43.30
Keith
Mm-hmm.
39:45.46
Jessica Ree
um Just getting out and you know, maybe finding a range that is private that they can go to with an instructor by themselves. So there's, there's nobody else around, you know, I prefer to teach group classes, but there have been people that have reached out that will say, you know, I learn better by myself when there's no one else around.
40:08.35
Jessica Ree
Uh, and that is totally understandable and I'm, I'm happy to accommodate them and I can, no, you're okay.
40:13.12
Keith
i think that's an important go ahead sorry
40:17.27
Jessica Ree
Uh, But, I mean, if it makes them feel better, then at the end of the day, that's I'm happy to do it. So.
40:24.80
Keith
whatever gets in there right i think that was a good point that you made though what if you can get out and and get in a in a place where there's not so many people shooting around you you eventually become a little bit desensitized to the noise so you don't have to
40:26.35
Jessica Ree
Right.
40:36.41
Jessica Ree
Yes.
40:41.35
Keith
If you're one of those people that jump a lot, you don't have to worry about always being that way.
40:46.42
Jessica Ree
Right. Yeah, gets better with time.
40:51.32
Britt
Have you seen a good um transformation from women who went from afraid to empowered through like, you know, the beginning of your class to the end?
40:59.40
Jessica Ree
Oh my gosh. Yes.
41:01.73
Britt
like so
41:01.90
Jessica Ree
That's, that is my favorite part of class. um You know, we, the majority of class is in the classroom, um you know, just handling the firearms safely, you know, no live ammunition or anything like that.
41:18.85
Jessica Ree
We use snap caps. So there's no powder in them There's no primer, so they can't, you know, the only way they're dangerous is if you were to toss them at each other, I guess. But, um, so that's the majority of class and the ladies will come to me.
41:36.44
Jessica Ree
They'll be, um incredibly nervous. Uh, some of them might even share their experiences with me, ah which can range from, you know, domestic violence situations to,
41:50.07
Jessica Ree
Maybe a friend or a loved one might have been harmed or even self-harmed with a firearm. um So they definitely come with fears and perspectives of their own. And it it's my job to give them a safe and comfortable environment to learn. So they will be nervous up until range time.
42:16.36
Jessica Ree
And we will get out on the range and, you know, I'll get them on the firing line and they'll be shaking. But it's they'll pull the trigger for that first time and and they'll just be like, oh, my gosh, I I just did it.
42:32.24
Jessica Ree
And I'm like, yes, you did. You just did it. And that's the best part for me. it always tell them, like, I thoroughly enjoy the range time with them because You can just see them light up. Like, you know, they came and they did something that they thought they would not be able to do.
42:50.86
Jessica Ree
um And I love seeing that. I love seeing them experience it.
42:55.45
Britt
Yeah, they conquered their fear.
42:57.26
Jessica Ree
ah we Right. Right.
42:58.44
Britt
Yeah, it's always a breakthrough moment.
43:00.92
Jessica Ree
right
43:03.92
Britt
Did you have anything else, Rhonda? I know there's a good question to wrap it up with, but I want to make sure we got our questions in.
43:10.43
Keith
No, no, go ahead.
43:12.47
Britt
Okay. um So Jessica, as we close it out, what would you say to the women who are listening right now who are scared, unsure, um or maybe just haven't been to the range in a while and that firearm is sitting, you know, on top of their dresser on their nightstand and you know so what would you say to them?
43:32.52
Jessica Ree
I would say that in the past year that I have been teaching, um ah have had almost, I would guess, ah at least 100 students.
43:43.49
Jessica Ree
um And i have not had a single one come back to me with feedback saying that they have regretted ah their decision to to learn or to invest in themselves.
43:56.94
Jessica Ree
Um, and, and that's what it is at the end of the day. You are investing in in yourself, um, and being your first, and being your own first responder. Um, and none of them have come back to tell me that they, they regretted that decision.
44:18.04
Jessica Ree
So, um, just one second. My husband just walked in the door.
44:24.95
Britt
Oh, no.
44:25.82
Keith
No problem.
44:28.28
Jessica Ree
Now I'm off track. I don't remember what I was saying.
44:31.41
Britt
I think it's definitely like face your fear, you know, just get over the hump and find, you know, a firearms instructor near you. Find somebody that you is known and trusted that you feel comfortable with and just get out on the range, you know.
44:47.29
Jessica Ree
Right.
44:49.13
Keith
I love what you said about be your own first responder. That should be a t-shirt that you make for your empowered defense solutions.
44:52.40
Britt
Mm hmm.
44:55.90
Jessica Ree
Right. I feel like a lot of people use that, so I would i would hate to
45:01.42
Keith
Oh, do they? I've never heard it before. I'm so out of touch with everything.
45:03.44
Jessica Ree
to take it. No, no, no. i don't I don't know. I just feel like, ah sorry, he walked in and I told him not to walk in the house and it made me nervous.
45:07.66
Keith
ah you're you're probably right.
45:12.58
Britt
yeah
45:12.88
Jessica Ree

45:13.26
Keith

45:14.30
Britt
I still don't film content or anything in front of my husband and he's also a content creator whatever you would call it so I totally understand
45:18.71
Jessica Ree
and
45:23.35
Jessica Ree

Britt

45:33.35
